Looks like winning your conference will not be a criteria based on this preliminary article. I'm sure the final version of the proposal/change will be different but I would like to have the conference championship be a requirement. Whats the point of having conferences otherwise.

Discuss...

the thing that i dont like about their thinking is that they want to play the final 4 games around new years and the NC a week later

so you are going to give these teams 3-4 weeks to prepare for the semi final game then just a week for the NC

Heard the neutral site was Birmingham.

Yeah they need to space the games out... 2 weeks of prep for each one

To create rivalries and traditions, to give teams a consistent schedule, and to award some lesser championship to certain deserving teams that may not make it into this four-team playoff scenario. If the only point of having conferences were to determine who made the hypothetical playoff, there should only be four conferences, anyway.

Why do yall think they need two weeks to prep for each game? We will be out of school at that time. NFL gets one week. We don't get two weeks for the sec champ game. I think one week off between games is plenty. It's not like one team will have three weeks off and the other only two.

I disagree on the more preparation time need. I think we see a lot of rusty teams as it is due to the long layoff. I sure do hope this happens. Also, not having the requirement to win your conference is the right way to go if they want to avoid conferences demanding they expand to 8.

The requirement should be that you can't go unless your conference champion goes. Unambiguous Conference championships (CG or outright round robin) should matter, but with 4 teams two teams from the same conference should be eligible. This rule accomplishes both.

It won't solve every problem. It wouldn't have solved anything this past season. If one team is left undefeated and unanimous number one, what does a four team playoff solve? We would have to play TWO extra games instead of one.

Translation Bama, UT, USC, and Notre Dame are locks as long as they don't lose more than one game

IMO, less than an 8-team playoff settles nothing.

O dang. Sorry about that. My mistake. I still think a two week break between game is not needed.

The 8 teams last year would've been
1 LSU
2 Alabama
3 Oklahoma State
4 Stanford
5 Oregon
6 Arkansas
7 Boise State
8 Kansas State

frick that. Shouldn't go any higher than 4.

Exactly. Teams from #5-8 usually have 2 or more losses and are often terrible.

4 team is better than current system!

Really Like the idea of pushing all bowls back to the traditional New Years Day slot

1 week is plenty of time between games, as schools do it every week during the season

Not all teams are in conferences. A conference schedule represents 2/3 or 3/4 of your season; playoff selection should be based on your entire season. Conference affiliation should be completely ignored.

Is two losses a POOR record? There are in most seasons more than 4 who have legitimate arguments that they should have been in the title picture. In 2004 and 2010, there were THREE UNDEFEATED teams. Auburn went undefeated in '04 through the SEC and had no shot.

It seems to me the ideal system would be flexable. A menu of 3 or 4 formats depending on the outcome of the season.

The first solution is not to have an extra game. If a team goes 13-0 and has already defeated team number two, LSU, err, number 1 gets the gold.

If two teams finish undefeated or with one loss each, bam, a plus one game.

If 3 or 4 teams all have one loss, or are all undefeated, have a four team plus two.

And that's it. Those would solve most outcomes.
