Saw it many times in the 1983 yr. at Dodger games..Couldn't throw the ball to first base many.30FT from 1st and throw the ball 15ft from ist base...My son had the same problem as a 12yr old .In a game he struck out 16 batters but 4 bad throws to ist on bunts..Started one day and lasted for over a year...
Hope it can be correct..Bother Sax for over a year..Sax was golden glove 2nd baseman befor and after it cleared up. 36 errors throwing to first that year. Now I'M 73 YRS OLD AND MY SPELLING AND GRAMER HAS NEVER BEEN GOOD. SO just read the story and forget my mistakes.

Jon Lester is a current version of what you're trying to describe.

Steve sax was pretty damn good at though. Cost him his career even though he was a legit hitter.

To the end of your OP

As far Jon Lester, he's currently a pitcher for the Cubs. He's having the same issues as Poche throwing to first base when fielding his position.

Lester threw his glove (and ball) to first earlier this year to record the out

Holy shite. Enough of the psychoanalysis already.

And here I am thinking that his bad throws were just a case of him being a human being capable of making physical errors in the heat of battle.

Yeah I saw that. It was hilarious but Lester did what he had to do. Having the yips like that has to suck though. As a player, it has to be frightening to have the ball hit to you & you are completely mind fricked to make a basic throw to first.

I pitched as well, and its a very easy/ humiliating mistake to make.

Its just one that we have to deal with as pitchers and learn to fight through.

I get what you are saying but a large part of sport is being able to handle the mental pressures that comes with competition. As much as you want to separate the physical aspect from the mental aspect, it's basically impossible. They intertwine. What's happening with Poche is just as mental as it physical. This isn’t over for him until he is able to begin to make those simple throws to first base on a regular basis. The yips are real & there are plenty of cases to look up. Ask Rick Ankiel. He lost the ability to pitch during the middle of a playoff game with the St. Louis Cardinals. He couldn't throw anything close to the plate & the yips ended his career as a pitcher. Here's a good article on the yips.

I pitched too from all my years through little league 10-12 through high school & AAU. I never experienced the yips but I did have a teammate & friend go through it. You hate to see someone deal with that. You try to say it's going to be alright but deep down you know it won't be. As a teammate you feel helpless, so I can imagine how it must feel to actually have it.

Leave him alone. He was just grouchy from being up past his bedtime.
