Please explain what instrumentation is used to determine a lightning strike
Posted by vl100butch on 9/6/15 at 11:28 am43
I'm actually quite curious...based on what I saw last night for the first pause, it seemed like it was a red elephant club secret decoder ring?
We sat there for a good half hour if not more before any rain started...and there wasn't lightning until a bit later...one would think that the first quarter could have been played...

I think they just ask a random person in the stands if he's seen any lightning and go with that.

Are you serious ?
As someone who stayed til they they called it , there was lightning popping all over every few minutes.
The issue of players warming up and then being delayed another 30 minutes at unpredictable increments was also a safety issue. Repeatedly warming up and cooling off and warming up again is asking for an injury, especially on a wet field.

Mike from Plaquemine in placed at the top of the West upper with bino's. Lightning strikes & he starts counting Mississippi's until he hears thunder....then bam! Instant science. Highly technical stuff.

Id have to imagine they use a lightning detector. They are very common on job sites and you can set the distance you want.

They use them at baseball stadiums all throughout the country I'm sure they are in outdoor football stadiums too.

What I'm curious about is what is the percentage chance of a player getting struck? Especially as opposed to if you don't mandatorily clear the seats what is the chance of someone in the stands getting struck or getting sick?

It's very, very low, but the percentage of dying from said strike is very, very high.

I was there as well...what I'm talking about is the initial call...I was high enough in the SEZ where I had a clear view beyond the state capital building
I could see some clouds to the west but otherwise the skies were pretty clear...

The first lighting strike delay was due to a cell southwest of the stadium.
