He was a good coach while he was here, just not a good Defensive Coordinator

Agreed, and I can't really blame him for that situation. It had train wreak written on it from the beginning.

Well, in retrospect, Pelini getting the Nebraska job came at a really bad time. LSU was preparing for it's BCSCG, and Les was fighting off rumors of "Miles to Michigan"...which hurt recruiting.

I will never stop believing that Herbie was trying to help out his Buckeyes by going on-air with that.

So to an embattled Les Miles, continuing with the same defensive staff minus Pelini, must have seemed like a great plan.

Im sorry, but who'd we lose? the Michigan thing flared up and died. Les gave the have a great day speech, and we won the SEC and BCS.

how was he embattled? he just won the NC. we had a ton of defensive talent returning, PP7 amongst others on the way in the 08 class, and groundwork was being laid for the 09 class. he prob could've had his choice of DCs.

LSU's recruiting class that year was the lowest so far of Mile's tenure at LSU. IIRC our class ranked 11th.

Obviously I'm talking about in the days prior to the BCSCG. Miles was busy recruiting, preparing a game plan, and reassuring his team, the school, and the fans. CLM made a decision and stuck with it.

I think maybe you have your timeline a little mixed up. The "Miles to Michigan" thing broke just before the SECCG. By the BCSNCG it was far in the rearview mirror.

We all knew it was a matter of time before Pelini left. I wasn't sure he'd even stay for the 2007 season to be honest. As for Herbstreit with "Miles to Michigan," how do you figure he was trying to help out OSU with that? At the time that was leaked, we seemingly had no shot of going to the BCS title game. It was pretty much a foregone conclusion that OSU would play WVU for the title at that point.

Don't recall the exact Pelini to Neb timeline but it happened relatively late and left Les in a little bit of a pickle. My understanding is that he wanted to lure Boom away from AU. Instead, Boom took the HCIW pos at UT. I suppose at that point Les just decided to use Malleveto as a stop-gap measure. It was a disaster, no nice way to put it but I don't think Peveto or Mallory were bad position coaches.

As a "Defensive" assistant, as well as ST coach, I hope BDP can make his way over to the area of the practice field where the DB's are running around and attempt to make some sense out of that poorly coached mess.

Oh BTW, my sincerest condolences and sympathies to all the wife beater supporters that wanted that pos back on the staff.

We lost a lot of defensive players after the NC game....from a team that gave up 50 in two of the games ....

I hated the idea of co d coordinators but that would have been a tuff job for anyone that year .....

I'm glad we waited and got chief though.....

Scout had it 7th, Rivals 11. both of them have given other LSU classes lower ratings during the Les era.

Les had agreed to his new deal to stay at LSU before the SECCG started. even if you believe there was some more "flirting" afterward, all that was put to bed when Rich Rod got the Michigan job in mid Dec. Pelini had already taken the Nebraska job. so he knew he was staying, recruits and fans knew he was staying, and he had ample time to get a new DC.

Up until last season our fans said chavis saved his job and was the best dc in the country. Problem was he was still coaching at tenn in 08. We could have gone in a diff direction, but it is possible the guy Les wanted wasnt available at the time. It was sort of a stop gap. And yes we would have been hiring a dc after the bcs title game and prob after nsd. There wouldnt have been much out there in febuary. The cam thing worked out because he lost his job in november. We werent trying to lure him from a school a month away from spring practice.

Was it really a disaster though? yeah our d wasnt up to par, but our qb was the disaster. Take away those pick sixes and the d doesnt look as bad. The d this year looked worse at times.

The 2008 Offense averaged 31 points a game despite Lee's struggles, bruh. It was the D. We gave up 31 plus in four of five losses (50 plus twice). I know some of that was pick sixes but still. . .
