Born June 22, 1947.

"ABOUT
Legendary crafty and dazzling point guard known as "Pistol Pete," who averaged 44.2 points per game at LSU and became the all-time leading scorer in college basketball history. In the NBA, he was a 5-time All-Star and the 1977 NBA scoring champion as a member of the New Orleans Jazz.

BEFORE FAME
His former professional ball player father, Petar Maravich, taught him the fundamentals while he was growing up in Pennsylvania.

TRIVIA
His NBA career was cut short by injuries, and his life was cut short by a sudden heart attack at the age of forty.

FAMILY LIFE
He had two sons, Jaeson and Josh, with his wife Jackie.

ASSOCIATED WITH
While the great Shaquille O'Neal also went on to star at LSU, his scoring numbers paled in comparison to Pistol Pete's."

Is this really necessary? You don't have to shite on Shaq to praise Pete. I mean they didn't even play the same position for Petes sake.

GOAT in any sport at LSU. Man, I wish I could have seen him play when he was here. He was taken from us way too soon. RIP Pete.

I always found it eerie that he died on a basketball court.

It's a shame he was stuck on garbage NBA teams during his career. His pro legacy wouldve been off the charts if he had a few rings.

One of the best ever.

True, but Shaq also had a much better supporting cast around him so he didn't have to score as much himself.

Up until a few weeks ago, that's all I knew about Pete Maravich's death. The details of his death are ironic and interesting. "Cliff's Notes" version:
Following retirement, Pete became a Christian. James Dobson (famous for he "Focus on the Family" radio show and numerous books on child rearing) invited Pete to speak at a seminar he was putting together at his church in Pasadena, CA. Pete agreed to speak. Dobson played basketball games w/ a number of other men at his church gym most mornings. He invited Pete to play w/ his group before the seminar started. It was during a break between games that Pete suffered his arrest and died. James Dobson was involved in carrying out CPR on Pete. I never heard of the changes that occurred in Petes' life shortly before his death.

The full version.

In a Sports Illustrated article, they described Pete on a fast break with an opponent between him and a teammate. Pete timed a pass between his own and the opponents legs to his teammate for a layup.

When he was playing for the Jazz and we were up comfortably he would frequently bank in his second freethrow.
