He was one of the best sportswriters

quote:

Mr. Finney was at places to write about major sporting events such as LSU's Tiger Stadium during Billy Cannon's legendary 89-yard punt return on Halloween Night 1959 in the annual grudge match against the University of Mississippi; John Gilliam's 94-yard touchdown return of the opening kickoff at the first Saints game at Tulane Stadium; and also Tom Dempsey's record-setting 63-yard field goal for the Saints.

Mr. Finney was a 17-time recipient of the Louisiana Sportswriter of the Year Award, and the Louisiana Sports Writers Association renamed its columnist-of-the-year award for him. He was inducted into the Greater New Orleans Sports Hall of Fame in 1998 and, a year later, into the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame.

Mr. Finney wrote two books: "The Fighting Tigers, 1893-1993: One Hundred Years of LSU Football" and "Pistol Pete: The Story of College Basketball's Greatest Star," about LSU's Pete Maravich.

I read many of his articles, before the Internet at least. He was a good one.

One of the best ever. I have his book, "The Fighting Tigers II, LSU Football, 1893-1980"; I'm looking at it right now.

I grew up reading his sports columns and always enjoyed them. RIP, Mr. Finney.

I threw the States Item before the merger with the Picayune. Finney was the Roesler of the States Item. Good writer.

In 1956 I was sitting in the Reveille office working on a story when Pete Finney, who was visiting the campus at the time, came up and asked if I had written a recently printed story. When I acknowledged having done so, he said he thought it was very informative and professionally done. Greatest compliment I ever received. My favorite N.O. sports writer.

Pete was in his own class, but he was not in the same "class" as Buddy D. Two totally different personalities in how they covered local sports. Pete could be counted on to know the inside inside scoop & did not favor one side or the other in any issue. He just laid out the facts as he knew them. Best of the best as far as I am concerned.

Pet and Buddy stood out among their peers. Enough said. No need to derail this thread.

RIP, Mr Finney. You will be missed.
