I realize that standard of care for animals like Mike were much different back in the day. But do you think the handlers were retards? At any point when dealing with a 700lb meat eating cat, does it sound like a good idea to intentionally make him angry?

I can't speak to prior to Mike IV - but they did rattle around a broom handle in there. This was done to encourage him to roar on the sidelines. He would get agitated and, ultimately, snap it into 3 or 4 pieces with his gigantic paws. He was only around 425 or so. That was unnecessary with Mike V as he would roar at Mike the Tiger. Mike VI is too chill and I think he is too superior and aloof to do anything his staff wants him to do. He's like CEO cat, except in tiger form.

It's a guide staff. Cat handlers almost always have one. Big cats are very reponsive to anything that resembles a spear for some reason.

Yeah, old Mike III used to get a lot of abuse from the cheerleaders back in his early days. I always thought if he managed to get out of that cage at that time he would quickly resort to selective gleaning from all 80,000+ people in that stadium for those fricking cheerleaders.

This. He's cared for by LSU Veterinaries. They probably love animals WAY more than the average person does.

If Pete could not notice McKnight driving around in a Range Rover, I doubt he has the eyesight to see Mike in his cage.

Where is the University of the Pacific and I remember playing them and pummeling them in 1970s.
Obviously Carol forgot about the pummeling he took.

Pete Carroll Says LSU Poked Mike da Tiger with Cattle Prods

Nope actually he says

quote:
They were poking him with a cattle prod or something as we were walking by."

Depends how you read it. "or something" to me implies they poked him with a stick or object of some sort, and Pete thought it might had been a cattle prod.

That didn't keep Carroll and his teammates from being intimidated when they played in the den of the LSU Tigers, walking onto the field by the school's mascot.

Carroll's quote:
"That thing scared the pie out of our team," Carroll said. They were poking him with a cattle prod or something as we were walking by. It was horrible."

#1 There was never, is, and will never be a "they" next to Mike's cage AS THE VISITING TEAM IS WALKING BY. And BTW, why was the U. of Pacific team "walking" by? shouldn't they have at least been trotting when they were announced in pre-game introductions?
#1A. The LSU cheerleaders have never been given "prods or sticks" to "poke" a 700 pound tiger. That is not what cheerleaders do.
#1B Even if that was even remotely true, a "cattle prod;' or stick would not fit in the little tiny holes in the outer shell that surround Mike's cage !!! The only thing that might fit would be a straw maybe?

#2. The Top Ten LSU School of Veterinary Medicine and the Athletic Department handlers would """"""""" N E V E R """""""""""" and have never allowed such shameful activity by anyone.

#3. Pete Carroll out-and-out MADE THAT UP. He is an absolute piece of skunk rectal refuse unborn mucas membrane regurgitated possum afterbirth.

#4. His team (also the 'Tigers') lost to LSU that night in 1972 31-13.

#5 He can go rot in the 13th ring of Hades.

I remember Mike being provoked to growling as recently as the late 60's early 70's, there was a microphone by the cage to pick up the growls pre-game, Carroll is relatively correct, something was used to at least rattle the cage to get a response that came over the PA system.

They never used cattle prods. They used a spray bottle with water in it. They would spray from the back of the truck. Tigers, and all cats, are not big fans of water. So when he was sprayed he would roar. Never were sticks ever used. That is from 1st hand experience.

Pete is still a tool!

A mike may have been put up to the cage, but nothing was ever used to rattle Mike's cage.
There were 2 surfaces anyway - the outer cage that had very small holes, and the inner cage that was too far inside the outer cage to fit anything into!!!!!!
Again, Carroll is a total liar....

I was there at that game with a beautiful date from New orleans named jane Russell--whatever happened to her? anyway, i digress---the Pacific team did walk by the cage at the time, because it was left by their entrance to intimidate the opponents. The cheerleaders did not use sticks or rods, but banged on cage to get Mike to roar.
