Perspective for those who complain about Miles salary

The average salary in the SEC is north of $4M. Sumlin at $5M, and Mark Stoops makes $3.5m...$3.5m!

No one complains about Miles' salary. Plenty complain about Cameron's and rightfully so.

Simply supply vs demand. Dumb fricks that complain about coach and pro player salaries are idiots. The worst NBA player for example is one of only 450 athletes in the entire world who are qualified for that job.

It's not the salary, it's his nearly unparalleled buy-out.

I hear you, but there are additional market forces at work here. TV deals, market averages, and emotion factor in.

The psychotic buy-out is the issue here.

you probably don't understand how his buy out worked; the 15 mil was spread out over 8 years and then any money he made at a new gig offset that years buyout.
15 mil divided by 8 equals 1,875,500 per year. if miles took another job making 1.8 mil the buyout would have been ZERO. and he's awfully young to just go to the house.

If I made any effort I could find 1000 posts that mentioned "$4 million for 9-3" or something similar

What has Miles accomplished in the past 4 years that UK and A&M hasn't? Texas Bowl? Music City Bowl?

I understand the buy-out completely.
If Miles was fired, I'm not sure he's taking another mid-level job. There is no way in hell he's getting an SEC gig or another upper tier power 5 conf job.
Even if he did take another job, he wouldn't be working for another 8 years. He's got 3-5 years left max.

A couple of things to remember:
1. Les Miles makes more in a year than you will likely make in your lifetime.
2. He makes more than you do because he is better at his job than you are at yours.

then you must agree it wasn't that bad. the wealthy alums funding it were willing (as rumored) to take the risk of miles not taking another job and splitting the 1.8 mil. but, imo, it was a good bet that he would have taken a job making that and would have worked at least half of that buy out frame.
the problem comes when we would have had to buy out the new coaches buy out AND, in Jimbos case, pay him enough over this already 5 mil per year to make the move worth it. in other words, he wanted Saban money. it wasn't the buyout, it was the overall "deal" that caused problems.

You don't get it. Accomplishments are one of many components to a coaches salary. You could well argue that market averages have more to do with salaries than accomplishments. Name the accomplishments of any sec coach not named Nick Saban over the last 4 years. Also, 4 years ago LSU was playing for its second national title under Miles. Miles is the 4th highest paid SEC coach and you could argue that he should be 2 or 3.

What LSU needs to do is fire Miles and hire a new coach for way less than Miles was getting. Then all the people bitching about coaching salaries would be happy. What possibly could go wrong?

This is an admission that the buy-out was a factor in Miles being retained.
Obviously, most potential coaches we would hire are going to have a buy-out. If Miles' buy-out wasn't as severe we might have a new coach today.
That was the only point I was trying to make.
