To begin to fix the billion dollar hole in the budget, are there any reasonable alternatives to raising taxes considering the fact that education and healthcare have pretty much been cut to the bone and even an amendment to the constitution to cut other entitlements will not solve the immediate problem. It looks like Jindel cut the public sector pretty substainally and took money from retirement and pensions as well so it doesn't look like there is much money there. For those in the know what are the other proposed options?

Whoever suggested to JBE that this speech was a good one to make is less smart than he is and that doesn't seem to be very smart.

So is the general consensus here that Jindal is a dumbass who overspent and is now strapped for cash and is threatening LSU's academics (and by extension football) so he can enforce a tax hike? Or is it more complicated than that?

so either your in debt or not in debt. Did Jindal somehow defer all the debt to the year he leaves office? what has made the sky fall now? I see only one problem, a cocky new sheriff in town that wants to put a gun to everyone's head. "Do what I want or I shoot". He'll single handedly ruin the economy and loose the entire voting community in his first few days. Football will continue to get backed by the boosters, all it does is make money so I don't see why you'd shutdown something that makes money and gives back. Oh yeah, it's politics!

I don't know much of anything about economics, but where does tuition money go? How is a typical public university funded? I mean, obviously some of the money comes from the State, but how much? Even if that entire 48 million (mentioned in the article) were going to LSU, I would think the state would lose more than.. what.. 5 times that amount if they no longer had the sales tax from merchandise, income tax from the faculty, etc. etc.

I mean the entire city of Baton Rouge would take an enormous hit and they'd be a lot more in the hole than when they started. Hundreds of businesses would leave. Thousands of people. Millions and Millions and Millions of dollars with them.

It seems to me it's kind of like saying "New Orleans has a budget problem so we're no longer going to allow tourism."

Can the kids enroll at another school to maintain eligibilty. Call the governors bluff and still play the regular schedule just with a different school name. Everyone on the team and TAF would have to go along with this "who blinks frst" deal, though.

As it currently stands the entire university system will not be able to keep the lights on past April.

It doesn't matter how much financial support the football program gets. He's not threatening to shut down football, he's saying that it's very much a reality if the shortfall is not addressed immediately.

He doesn't want to shut anything down, he's saying it could happen. Essentially presenting the most extreme worst case scenario to get people to wake the frick up.

From what I can understand Jindel would keep keep things going year to year by pulling money from one time options like selling buildings or emptying trust funds for state infrastructure. Either those options have run out or this governor refuses to use them. I would not blame him, it is not sustainable. Most of the people here are saying this is a plot to raise taxes which I do not believe is a bad thing if you currently do not have any other sources of revenue or places to cut. You just have to make sure it isn't too much of an increase. Is the govenor not telling the truth? Are there other revenue streams or places to cut? Is he not telling the truth about not having enough money through April to keep the college system going in Louisiana? I know people are mad about the football season comment but LSU has to keep the academic side of the house going regardless of the football program.

He's not telling the truth when he claims the state's financial mess is a surprise to him. He was in the state legislature for what, 8 years voting on these budgets. He's been part of the problem but passes the blame and acts all doe-eyed innocent. Truly the white Obama.
