I'm thinking that PM hired Gibbs cause no one else was available. Cannizari (sp?) left last fall. By that time, it may have been tough for PM to hire a top notch hitting coach.

With LSU struggling to hit, and with pitching being a strength.. I do not understand why he doesn't play small ball at times and manufacture a run. The other night, Duplantis led off an inning. I think LSU was down 2-0. Why not let him use his wheels and try to bunt on? Didn't happen.

I see this team getting into a regional... MAYBE at the Box just because it's a good venue for the NCAA. But they won't advance out of the regional.

The loss yesterday will sting a while. PM is going to have to be a great motivator to pull them out of the funck.

Yes I agree PM hired Gibbs only b/c it was too late to hire a top notch hitting coach. If hitting doesn't improve, or even if it does, I don't see Gibbs being the hitting coach next year.

Do you realize that this time last year LSU was 4-5 in the SEC and ended up being a national seed losing to the eventual CWS champions? That team overachieved. We are 5-4, could've easily been 6-3 if our closer would've done his job. I'd rather him blow a save right now than later in the year. Our hitting is a problem but I'm a lot more confident that this team will find its groove than I was this time last year. It's a long season. People need to stop freaking out.

hitting was not the problem yesterday - we lost a 3 run lead in the ninth - let's talk about the pitching coach
his closer - did not close!

Bub we had 4 hits against the Sunday starter on one of the worst pitching staffs in the SEC....That doesn't concern you?

it may not have directly lead to the loss, but it is definitely a problem only getting 4 hits on a Sunday starter who just the week before threw 110+ pitches through 4 innings

If nobody was available why was Gibbs hired without a coaching search in 2 weeks with CPM claiming to the media that was the plan all along because he didn't think Cannizaro would be here very long?

People need to stop making comparisons to last year. We're missing a major component (Cannizzaro) from last year. That makes all comparison moot.

Yeah, closing out game is the obvious blame yesterday, however, if you have more timely hitting, you are up by more runs. Hiring a volunteer assistant as your hitting coach amazes me. I know it was late in the process when Cannizzaro left, but you can't tell me that there weren't other more qualified hitting coaches who could have been hired. Gibbs is out after games partying with his GF. He's not experienced enough to have this job.

It doesn't work that way anymore. Regional host are rewarded to teams that earn it.
That's why many of us recognize that when LSU earns a top 8 seed, it was a real accomplishment. Not just something handed out because it will draw a crowd.

We are playing small ball. Perfect example yesterday. 3-0 lead in the top of 9 and needed a closer.

As far as hitting in my opinion, a few batters in this lineup could be a excellent choice for an assistant coach anywhere they prefer hitting fly balls to the outfield in practice. That is a sure thing.

How can you say it was to late to hire hitting coach. State had just hired ours to be head coach. Take a few weeks and go after a proven hitting coach. If we are the elite baseball team we think we are that should have helped in finding one or we are not as elite as we think?

don't confuse folks with facts like this... as with any baseball game, you need to out score the opponent, and we haven't been doing that...
but, a 3 run lead with 3 outs to go should have been enough...

They didn't have a choice. Their head baseball coach was named AD.

I don't think it was "to (sic) late" to hire a hitting coach. I just think Mainieri put more emphasis on continuity than I would have liked to have seen him do. I would have preferred for him to go after an established, successful hitting coach, preferably someone from or close to Louisiana who already knows the recruiting situation here.

But he didn't ask my opinion about what he should have done, regardless of what Lester Earl thinks....

It's easy to say this especially with A&M scoring all 4 runs with 2 out and that is on Gilbert, yet how about the plate appearances by LSU in the bottom of the 9th when 1 run would extend the game? How about 4 hits in the game? How is a team this frequently unproductive at the plate in key moments and in general? That was a very tough loss, shite happens, but these guys have to find a way to start generating more productive at bats throughout games if they want to accomplish anything this season.

My point is that teams get better as the year goes on all the time. Sure if Cannizzaro wasn't here last year, I don't think they turn it around like they did. But, this team is a lot more experienced so a hitting coach isn't near as important as he was last year. The veterans are the ones who are struggling mainly. It's all mental. They've proven they can hit, just need to gain some confidence.
