Something about his voice and expressions drive me crazy. He may be a great guy but I don't like him in this role.Anyone else notice?

I noticed Hawthorne wasn't there, which is great. Hope they keep it this way the whole year.

I think he is fine for women's sports, but he certainly isn't an A-caliber play-by-play broadcaster.

Good. Have enjoyed listening to him for years.

The thing about this search for a new voice is...nobody is going to please everybody.

No doubt and Wright is probably better than some. And if he really starts to bug me I can watch with sound off and listen to the radio.

Last night they were one in the same....the TV feed synced up the radio broadcast and used that as their audio...

Don't worry...Hawthorne will be back this weekend since basketball is at home...and people can resume bitching about him

I went to school with Patrick at LSU back in the day. He's been angling for that job since the day he walked through the door as a freshman.

My take on him is that he's a good play by play guy who doesn't have an ideal voice. He's also a little too "formal" for the LSU crowd, which generally likes a more laid-back approach. Not the "warmest" guy in the world. He would have to be paired with a very experienced and polished color guy.

That being said, you couldn't find a guy more dedicated to his craft. The dude was probably working on play by play skills in his bathroom while everyone else was at prom. I would like to see LSU continue to give him games here and there. I don't think he's "the" guy, though.

Yep. Do they have any meaningful things going on in their lives?

Hey Tyger wasn't bitchin' but trying to find out if he bugged anyone else. It probably was negative though but I'm proud to be the one to break the negative barrier on the rant

hbuc did you mean more meaningful than hanging in the rant wondering about meaningful things in other people's lives?
And since you're concerned, my life is full of things that are truly meaningful. Thanks for your concern though.

Meh...I wouldn't say "negative" as much as stating a personal opinion. I will allow it.

Like I said earlier, no broadcaster is going to please everyone, especially around here. There would have been a separate thread on the Rant bitching about Vin Scully if he had done the game last night. Nobody is immune.

Same here, and agreed. We were in student media together. He always reminds me of a Sean McDonough type. A little dry but can get excited. Also very good with the action and details, which is what you want in a PBP guy. Knows his stuff.

Wright has no business being up there, send him back to women's sports

Rantz needs to stay and keep it a two man booth

Yeah, I hate when someone is good at their job and actually knows about baseball. We need to hurry up and get Jim back in there - His voice sounds sooo much better!!

I don't think there's any chance he gets the football job. But LSU's been prepping him for basketball and baseball now for a while since he calls the womens games for those. He's pretty solid. The only thing about him is he loses control of his voice sometimes when he gets excited and his voice doesn't have that "big time" sound to it. That's why I expect someone else to do football.

If that was the guy used on the TV feed he lasted 2 innings with me before the sound went off and stayed off.

Its funny because I remember him from LSU also... I didn't know him at all, but saw him around campus and the REC center, and for some reason I knew who he was. He was such a small guy with a big voice and definitely didn't fit how he looked.

Once all this talk started about him being a possible replacement for Hawthorne I google his picture and he looks the same, just a few more lbs... As we all have 20 plus years post college.
