Patch design on head coach's sleeve

Sorry if retarded, but does anybody know the origin/history of the hexagonal patches with a vertical line and a dot visible on head coach's left sleeves near the shoulder? Hadn't noticed them before this season.
Is the purpose to ID to the ref who is authorized to call timeouts?

It's just a zipper pocket. The "dot" is a small opening so you can plug earbuds into your phone while it's in the pocket.

It's just a NIKE thing they came out with this year. All coaches who wear a jacket from Nike have them.

I don't think it's marketing as much as design.
But, hey, if you need a place to store some stuff while on the sideline...or out for a run...it might come in handy.
