Hey Ags,
When did the name "Aggie" begin to be used officially to represent your school? Was it started way back in the TAMC days or more recently? Sorry for the ignorance but just wondering.

BTW, Here is a link to the history of our mascot:

Wow, I guess that is really the beginning, but can you verify that with one of the "Old Army" Ags on your forum? No disrespect intended, but I was hoping for a more detailed response with some sort of reference.

We began as the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Texas, so I imagine "Aggie" has served as an abbreviation for agricultural types since the very beginning. I've seen old game programs refer to us as "Farmers" as well.

A "Gig" is a small multi-pronged spear used to hunt fish/frogs/<insert any small creature>.

Gig 'em began in 1930 at the yell practice before the TCU game. Gig the frogs...

FWIW, both Oklahoma State and Mississippi State were once knows as X A&M and used the nickname "Aggies".

Teams for UC-Davis, near Sacramento, also go by the name "Aggies".

We haven't. The official name of the school is Louisiana State University and Agricultural and Mechanical College. Way too long of a spell out for a college cheer as opposed to L.S.U.

I know, just saying many people even in Louisiana don't know this. Which is always comical to me.
