Ok old timers - how many of you remember the old guy that started "Tiger Bait"? Back in the early 70's, his basketball seats were right in front of my parents seats. I can remember in Jr. High hearing him yell in the Assembly Center (now the PMAC). His voice would carry in that arena. I remember a conversation with him telling us he would yell it at football games too, but it was already too loud.

He was old back then, I am sure long past. Pretty cool if you think about it where some of our traditions come from - rabid LSU fans.

I don't know that he started the chant. I think it's probably safe to say, he didn't.

He was far and away the most vocal chanter of that ever, though. You'd swear the guy must have had a megaphone, but no it was just his own booming voice.

Seems like LSU's "Tiger Bait" would be older than the 70's. Auburn has chanted "Tiger Meat" since at least the 50's. Seems like LSU would be at least that old

Could be older, but man, he did have a booming voice.

I saw Big Red on local Baton Rouge television when I was in college. He claimed to have originated the Tiger Bait chant and no one was disagreeing with him. Big Red said he copied it from Gator Bait.

I remember Big Red from the Ag Coliseum in early and mid 1960s. Once he got going, perhaps once or twice a game, it was impressive. This was at a time when we couldn't win in basketball, and there was no heat in the Ag, and everyone--perhaps 800 of us--watched from under overcoats. He may have originated "Tiger bait!"; I was in junior high and high school, so no way of knowing if "Tiger Bait" preceded him, but do know it became a more common phrase in the 1970s than it had been in the 1960s.

I first heard Big Red my freshman year in 1975. It was the first home game against TAMU. I was sitting in our "Frat" section; everyone was drunk (duh), loud and bellicose. Then we heard this penetrating sound; not necessarily loud but piercing. And there stood (off in the distance) around the 40 yard line a hulking older guy with his hands clasp around his mouth making a sound that sounded like "HIGER MATE! HIGER MATE! HIGER MATE!

Everyone stopped yakking to take in the moment and realize that this man was special and had a special love for the Tigers.

Young minds . . . very impressionable . . . I still try to imitate him to this day. People think I'm crazy (and this is California) but the hell with them. He made his impression and I love trying to keep the tradition alive.

In the mid to late 60s, I remember Big Red actually having a silver colored megaphone that might have been 12 to 15 inches long. My dad would want to go in the stadium early, couldn't wait to get in Tiger Stadium, and Big Red would already be in his section. He was the only one in the section and the megaphone was clearly visable when he began chanting. He was seated in the curve on the Northeast side of the stadium. My dad is 84 years old, started going to LSU games in 1949. Big Red was there yelling Tiger Bait then.

Agree with you 100 percent. Remember Big Red very well and would sit behind him at Baseball games when I was going to LSU and before Bertman took over and built the baseball program and you could no longer sit where you wanted . Also love your picture and the statement regarding the Louisiana Tigers.

Wasn't there also an older guy in the 70s who'd endlessly yell "Go Tigers, Go Tigers, Go Tigers..." over and over again with a booming voice? Or am I confusing this with Big Red and his cheer?

Cheer definitely pre-dates the 1970s as I heard it back in the 60's at the home football games.

I don't know the origin.

However, I think the SI article on the LSU-ND '71 football game mentions the "Tiger Bait" cheer which suggests it was already entrenched as a tradition then.
