They've played two ranked teams and we've played five (at the time). Are their passing rank (2nd nationally) and scoring rank (also 2nd) factors in the computer love fest?

It doesn't matter until December. Just don't get it.

Playing an FCS school really hurt our SOS

This. The Bama game will obviously help.

The computers do not have pre-season rankings. They look at win lose records of opponents, and opponents opponents.

This is an exceedingly stupid qualification.

So if a top 5 team is supremely overrated in the preseason, just because you were the first to expose them means you still get the say at the end of the year that you leveled a top 5 team?

The computers adjust your SOS all year based on the results of the field, not by a static image of the team when you played them.

Its why the WVa loss to Syracuse was expected to trickle down and hurt LSU's computer ranking.

Other than Miss. St., which of our ranked opponents was so vastly overrated?

I was just making a point.

I thought the hypothetical was made fairly obvious with the phrase "So if a...."

The connection to here is the fact that he said we played 5 ranked opponents (at the time of playing).

Well, what difference does that make if only 3 of them are ranked now?

I have no idea what the computers see that we don't.

LSU's opponents are 29-21. We have wins over 2 current teams in the coaches poll(#7 Oregon, #24 WVU)

OSU opponents are 26-23. They have a win over #16 Texas.

I don't get it.

Except the computers don't use those rankings.

And they don't stop at 25 in their rankings.

We might have more ranked teams, but the average gets murdered from having an FCS team on the record.

Its like getting a zero on a test...you can ace the other ones, but your average is going to get murdered.

West Virginia just got beat up by Syracuse. I'd call that vastly overrated.

What the human polls rank them is IRRELEVANT. It is even more irrelevant what they were ranked at the time.

The computers think Mississippi State is garbage (they are), Florida and Auburn are average, and W Virginia is above average at best. So we have one really great win (Oregon). The Margin of Victory is also irrelevant. So re-make the argument with that information

I chuckle every time I read we beat x amount of ranked teams (No disrespect to poster). But let me ask this can... someone tell me the last time a team lost the moved up in the rankings?

Sorry but I have to disagree. I think this is the biggest misconception with computers. For the most part (and this is just a general rule), the computers don't rank your "average" SOS - it is more of a cumulative SOS.

1. Playing an FCS or bad school doesn't "hurt" your rating. You wouldn't be better off in general by playing OPEN DATE. It only really hurts you in the sense that you missed an opportunity to play a good team.

2. It is the top of the schedule that matters. Crap is crap and there is little difference in playing team #80 and #120.

Good point.

How would the computers rank an FCS school? Like the App State argument after they beat Michigan - they could have also beat the bottom 50% of the FBS.

Not that Northwestern State is anywhere close to that level, but the question remains: how does a (objective) computer know that NWS is infinitely worse than ULL (a rent-a-win in Ok State's win column)?

About the same as having an OPEN DATE. Rarely doesn't it hurt, it just doesn't help. But playing Miss State or Ole Miss isn't much better.

*** COLLEY sometimes punishes you a very little bit by playing a poor team, but that is a bit of anamoly
