Why Gary Andersen left Oregon State and left $12 million on the table.
Gary Andersen is out as Oregon State’s head football coach, and in an unusual way. The school announced Andersen’s resignation on Monday, and it came with a twist: Andersen is freeing the school from all of its financial obligations to him.
To think something else is at play here is a natural impulse. Letting your employer keep almost $13 million out of goodness of heart or purity of spirit is not something most people would do. I definitely wouldn’t. And there’s always the possibility that more news surfaces in the weeks and months to come, changing how this story looks.
But for the moment, it looks like Andersen left because he didn’t think he was doing a good enough job. That’s it.
John Canzano writes in The Oregonian:
Gary Andersen confided weeks ago that he wasn't going to hold Oregon State hostage if he didn't think he could win in Corvallis.
I rolled my eyes. Didn't believe him.
Oregon State was committed to Andersen through 2021 after the contract extension he just received. Walking away was leaving $12 million on the table. But Andersen met on Sept. 25 in the early morning on campus with athletic director Scott Barnes.
That was Monday after a Bye Week. Andersen spent the off week fuming and fighting through his discouragement. Barnes was Andersen's right-hand man in the same AD role at Utah State. Nine days earlier Andersen lost to Washington State 52-23, but he was frustrated that a $1 million weight room project had the funds temporarily frozen. Also, he had other concerns about support at OSU, but he left the 7 a.m. meeting that day with Barnes feeling optimistic.
He told me: "We are on the same page overall. I respect Scott and I won't hold him hostage."

Why would he go the trouble of conning Alleva and our fans just to leave many millions on the table?

Anderson is a F'in idiot. Why bother even negotiating a buyout if you're going to walk away from it?

Andersen's record at Or St is horrible. I have a lot of respect for the guy if he realized he just couldn't do it there and didn't want to get paid to suck.
Coaches are always holding players and staff accountable. Why not themselves as well?

No one in their right mind would leave that buyout on the table. I don't care if the whole state of Louisiana hates me for eternity I would get paid.

Does the PAC-12 have a Houston Nutt type figure who could FOIA Anderson's phone records?

To all you O haters, we still have most of the season ahead of us after a disappointing start. Not the first time we have been here with all of our previous coaches - including Nick the Great. Quit bitching and get behind O and the Tigers. Secondly, Anderson is a moron. Nobody should walk away from money that sets them up for life. Maybe a settlement, but not the whole thing. O will have to earn his paycheck, and on Saturday, I think that we have a pretty good shot at beating Auburn.

As much as I dislike that O is the HC, I wouldn't respect him if he left his buyout on the table.
I'm not sure what happened at OSU, but you can't leave $11M on the table if you have children.

It is certainly not unheard of for a party to a contract who is unable to perform as expected to give the other party a right to rescind.
And despite the comments here, it is generally accepted as an honorable gesture.
I do not expect DaCoach O to make such and offer.
Just leave it at that...

No, LSU could have kicked a FG and took a knee in the end zone.

If you love your children, and you have sense, you would absolutely leave that money on the table. About 19 out of 20 kids who inherit millions of dollars wind up unhappy.
