Because sayinga first year starter will improve in year 2 is just an excuse, and he ain't having it

But hey, there are guys that play well in their first year starting.

CFB has 1st yr starters who have anywhere from 0-4yrs of practice reps and film, so really 1st year starter is a term that means practically nothing in expectation.
There was a time when most every 1st yr starter was a RS Jr/Sr that learned and developed waiting his turn.

you're cherry-picking my list. Half of those guys were underclassman.

Now, would I prefer a 5th year senior starter who's been under the same OC and same system his whole career? Of course. But many/most of the upperclassman I listed weren't like that - they either came from JUCO to a brand new system or transferred into a new system:

Sims was under a brand-new OC in Kiffin for his first (and only) year starting, and didn't even start his career as a QB.
McCarron was a redshirt SOPH
Coker transferred in to Bama
Nick Marshall (started career as a DB) and Cam were both in their first year at Auburn after JUCO, I think both were RS SOPH.
Chad Kelly transferred into Ole Miss, was RS JR
Bo Wallace came from JUCO and was a RS SOPH
JT Barrett was a redshirt FR
Cardale Jones was 3rd string - don't care how old he was.
Josh Rosen was a true FR
Brett Hundley was a redshirt FR
Deshaun Watson was a true SOPH
Kizer was a true SOPH
Stidham was a true FR
Tebow was a true SOPH
Manziel was a redshirt FR
Jameis was a redshirt FR

Comparing first year starters without acknowledging their time in the program is ridiculous.

A kid starting after 3 yrs in a program should be more effective than a kid starting his 2nd yr in a program. How freaking hard is that to understand? It's not some kind of excuse, if just a fact of life in sports.

wait, don't misstate my position. I've NEVER said that first year starters won't improve in year 2 or that experience isn't helpful. I've never said that.

What I have said is that first year starting QBs can play very well, regardless of their lack of experience.

So, in short, experience certainly helps, but isn't absolutely required for productive QB play. That's all I've argued.

So you've argued that it is just an excuse, for something you agree helps, and for a reason that literally no one disagrees with.

Show me 1 post that has said that experience is "absolutely required" for productive QB? What a hero.

I mean in that other thread, you literally said:

quote:

there's that excuse again, as if first-year starters can't play well in college ball.

When the poster said this:

quote:

Because that's EXACTLY what we did multiple times on 3rd down in that game in the first half alone with Harris essentially as a first year starter.

Where did he say or imply that a first year starter can't play well in college ball?

I picked SEC players. Because their stats are comparable to other SEC players. They play the same defenses and have the same level of competition.

Every single SEC QB you posted had more college development years than Harris. Every single one. No one is arguing that a Junior or Senior shouldn't be able to step in and take over, especially in comparison to a freshman or sophomore.

Yet you keep comparing a 23 year old Senior QB to a 19 year old true sophomore and acting like it is the same thing. Those 3-4 years don't make a difference /s

There is a ton of talent on the team right now that could run the WR or HB screen. If only it was in the playbook.
