Saw Nikita yesterday and he is a truly nice guy, we talked some basketball and whats going on with some of the former players. I brought up the 87 run to elite 8 and we talked about that game for a bit with Indiana. He jokingly said, I still tell John Williams today we would have won it all if he played that year. Then he said he left it short on final shot and laughed. I enjoyed talking to him

I was playing pick up ball in the gym armory in about '83 when it was suddeny taken over by the football players. I guess the field house was closed or something. Nikita was there, too.

There was a bunch of future NFL stars including Eric Martin and Dalton Hilliard, so naturally I lost the floor, and I was behind one of the baskets enjoying the action. For some reason the football players were dogging Nikita, and he was getting frustrated - nobody was feeding him, either.

Then he grabbed an offensive rebound right in front of me, and with football players crowding and bumping him, he hunched over, protecting the ball, yelled, "Well, I can do this!", and stuffed the ball. Those were the only words he said all day.

I probably didn't do it justice, but it was hilarious.

Or maybe they would have won it all in 86, had Nikita not been academically ineligible for the spring semester

It is crazy to still remember faces of LSU basketball players from 30yrs ago.

No way I would recognize Ricky Blanton, Jose Vargas, etc if I ran into them out in the streets.

You just picked two of the most recognizable players I can think of not named Shaq,Chris, or Ben in the last 30 years.

Ricky because of all the air time from his great time at LSU bridging the gap from the '86 team to Chris Jacksons team, his time on air on TV and radio in BR, and his time as the Nicholls head coach.

Jose, because how the hell would you not remember that face? Tiger Tators, ftw.

He was unstoppable in that Indiana Elite 8 game in '87 until Dale decided to go four corners and stopped getting him the ball.

That loss is still today one of the more painful as an LSU fan in any sport. I so wanted to beat that a-hole Knight.

Man we had an outstanding year in '86. My 3rd year and well, sports killed my grades that year. football won the SEC, Baseball went to the CWS and Basketball went to the final 4. What sucked the most were the losses to Miami of Ohio and Ole Piss that year. Nebraska wasn't really that much better than us. Arnsbarger fricked us with that UF shite.
