He goes and gets his degree and gets started somewhere else. Sucks to say but that knee injury already killed his career in that case, he wasn't really going to stick anywhere

e: Never mind, thought you were saying he got cut, I misread the "never saw the field thing." You're right

Nah was placed on injured reserve and has a contract, Chris Faulk is signed for 3 years / $1.42 million with the Cleveland Browns. He is making $288k in 2013.

I'd leave early at the chance at 1.42 million over 3 years and 288k to reahb for 2013.

If he returned to LSU would he have been able to better position himself this year considering his health?

Probably not because as I said last page, his knee gave him trouble again so he probably never sees the field for LSU last season.

Not that late round picks don't make much but that under the old CBA, the value of being in the early rounds was so great it was worth the risk. The new CBA significantly deflated what the early round picks are getting.

Why can people not understand that that is actually the reason they SHOULD leave.

It used to be worth it for a player to stay an extra year to "improve his stock" and move from a 5th-7th round pick to a 2nd-3rd type player.

But now that the rookie wage scale locks in the lower values of even early round picks, the smarter move is to leave as soon as possible to get to the second contract where their value can be awarded by the market, not by a wage scale. Even if you're going to be a 6th round pick the benefit of staying and working your up to a 2 or 3 round grade is not that great.

If the OP was being honest, he would have analyzed the "Early Round" Rookie Salary Differences over the last 5 years. I expect the dropoff would be substantial.

That is why staying makes little to no sense.

OP is also wrong about Ego. He will go in the top 2 rounds, and could go ahead of Freak.

turner, ware, ford, hilliard, faulk (after his injury), simon, etc aren't making that jump, regardless

My bad. Typo. I actually meant top 3. Was responding to this post:

quote:

and the guys leaving early that are making heads scratch aren't top 3 round possibilities (just throwing out names discussed: ego, turner, hilliard, magee). landry/OBJ should be top 3 round locks. hill almost there. freak is getting hype in the draftink circles, but i'd say he's 50/50 to go in the top 3 rounds. that's a total of 4, and those guys make sense. the egos, turners, faulks, etc are the ones that kill our depth.

I just think I don't understand what your position is looking at some of your later posts in this thread. You're kind of all over the place.

And the advantage is they gain an additional possible year of earning potential in the NFL, and they get to the second contract earlier where their income is more reflective of their worth as opposed to the rookie contract when their value is locked in by scale.

So if a 2nd rounder and 6th rounder are going to make marginally different money, go ahead and start the clock to get to the second contract.

I would hardly call $500k a year, guaranteed, a marginal difference. You could argue that it is for the franchise, but not an individual.

LINK

Just divide signing bonus over the life of the contract. All first year salaries are based on signing bonus + rookie minimum 405k.

The bigger question is what contracts looked like in 2008 for 3rd round picks versus what they look like now.

This is a basic cost-benefit scenario.

A guy can leave early and go in the 5th round or he can risk staying and try to earn a 3rd round grade. What is the economic benefit of those two extra rounds in today's market versus what it was in 2008?

Unless you are going to be able to upgrade yourself in your senior season to a 1st round draft pick from a 2nd or 3rd round grade (and willing to accept the risk), then it appears the market of players is saying to risk of returning for school is not worth it.

Another angle to remember is the personal piece. If you came in with a bunch of guys out of high school and then they all go pro, then this will tempt you to go pro as well. Those are your friends and the people you are closest with on the team.

The chances a 6th rounder can actually become a 2nd rounder are quite slim.

nobody is pondering why OBJ/Landry/Hill are leaving, and we wouldn't have in 2008, either

you EXPECT to lose those guys (at least since miles' lost the mojo to get them to stay)

but this still begs the question of when this changed and why, because we didn't see this even 3 years ago, really

Right, we are talking about Ford, Turner, Ware, etc.

Looks like there has been a realization that going from a 5th round pick to a 4th round pick doesn't have the marginal benefit to warrant the risk of another year of college football.

Have Turner and Hilliard declared? Ware and Ford probably get even less playing time this year. Is there any chance they could have improved their stock enough to go in the top 3 rounds? Faulk was hurt and probably should have come back. Then again, it could have been Ciron Black all over again.

I think the bigger issue is we really haven't had anyone stay and improve their draft stock. Loston will probably change that. Possibly Mett, but I don't think he ever considered leaving early.
