Its sad that our dominant closer only saw 1 appearance/inning in a 3 game series. It's the postseason can't have our best guns on the bench not being fired

Smith and Gilbert are not the answers as primary starters. I might give smith another shot at least as the 4th guy but not gilbert. Bain another 4th starter option over Gilbert also.

Newman has already shown the ability to shut teams down 3-4 innings and throw 50+ pitches

Bugg or Latz can close games if needed to. Lange doesn't need a closer it's the postseason.

Also, can Russell Reynolds not pitch anymore if at all avoidable now that Latz is back? Use Devall too. Thank you that is all.

Newman's our best reliever.

He's pitched in two games this entire season. You can't be serious.

I think mainieri was testing Reynolds today. He knows he isn't reliable right now and since he screwed up last night he gave him one more shot today. I wouldn't expect to see him in a pressure situation in the post season.

We were playing for the bye and the possibility to be a favorite for a national seed. That is not the spot where you "test" a guy.

Smith is our 3rd starter for sure.

I'd insult you in a dickish manner while saying no to your dumb suggestion, but that was the old me...

Newman may be our best reliever but it does no good to have an elite closer if you don't have the starting pitching to give him a save situation. Hence why Newman has only 6 saves and I can think of several SEC series where he has had only 1 appearance.

I need to explain why Gilbert isn't a postseason caliber starter when he has 3 starts and a 5.11 ERA? Seriously? Riley Smith has a 7.64 ERA but small sample size unlike Gilbert.

Bain has been effective in middle/long relief, started some weekend games last year and was decent, and has an ERA in the mid 3's

I'm serious about Latz but I listed Bugg first for a reason.

Newman only has 6 saves because he's only been closer for 3 weeks. Poche and Lange cannot be relied upon to go full games. Someone has to close out these 1-run and extra inning games that have been so crucial lately. That doesn't happen without Newman in his current role.

There. A legit response. Now change your mind or double down on stupid by trying to still defend it. Your choice.

Smith has looked good over his last 3 outings. I'm very confident with him against a team's #3. I look forward to seeing him start Game 1 of the regional.

9 hits, 2 walks, and only 3 runs allowed in his last 11 innings pitched. (2.45 ERA)

Correct me if I'm wrong but he was dealing with an injury at the start of the year, right?

Matty Ott should be our 3rd starter.

I was about to upvote this, then I read...

...and remembered why you are considered so negatively on here.

Newman closed out to games last weekend and there is a good chance that if game 2 yesterday was a close situation Newman would have been in.

I think Smith could still be a #3 starter for us. He's been pitching better for us the past few games. To me, I like Gilbert better in the bullpen, so I would put him there. Newman needs to stay exactly where he is at the end of games. He seems perfect there, so I wouldn't change it.

I wish some people would not go to the insult when you disagree with someone. Everyone has an opinion and should not get insulted in most cases

Latz has pitched 2 innings this year and you think he should be the closer?

No way, we need a consistent arm to finish out the games. That is just as important.

It's amazing that the OP knows so much more about pitching that LSU's HOF head coach ( and who was the SEC's COY last yr & 4 other yrs as well ) & its pitching coach who was the Orioles minor league director of pitching for almost a decade & has almost 20 yrs experience in handling pitching staffs. Obviously he's seen every bull pen session thrown by all of our pitchers & he knows exactly who has been performing the most consistently. CPM has been quoted, numerous times when questioned about a pitching decision, as saying that before each game/series, he & Coach Dunn sit down & map out their pitching plans, almost inning by inning, game situation by game situation. His point being they do not simply wing it.
