“No Kin of Mine”
Directed by Marc Kinderman
Rudy Macklin’s jersey is hanging from the rafters at LSU’s Pete Maravich Assembly, and for good reason: He is the school’s all-time leading rebounder. He carried the Tigers to the 1981 Final Four in Philadelphia. Back then, the tournament included a third-place game, and that’s where the trouble started for Macklin. Just before the consolation game against Virginia, President Ronald Reagan was shot, and after the loss, Macklin was asked if the news might have affected the team. His response—”He’s no kin of mine”—was so blown out of proportion that he feared for his life. In this documentary, directed by Marc Kinderman for ESPN Films, Macklin looks back at the anxious times when he thought he might get hung for a different reason.

Rudy and Ronnie are/were both good peeps. Glad to see him get some recognition, even if it is in the usual ESPN-hyper-drama-Narrative form. And screw Bobby Knight.

Good to know stupid questions from the media existed then too.

Billy Cannon, right?

Not blown out of proportion. He said what he meant and regretted that it reflected poorly on him. Would have been just as easy to say "not my place to comment on that." As for him 'fearing for his life', he worked as a banker in Baton Rouge. He's no Salman Rushdie.

I hope this is about more than a former player for LSU's basketball team. Nothing against Macklin as he was great but a documentary about him? ESPN must be running out of ideas. The 85 Bears was great as that was the best defense ever. If he was involved in gambling, some sort of underground crime, etc. sure, but why would they document a film about a guy who wouldn't be one of the top 50 college players of all time?

Stupid responses like his are the reason stupid questions are asked.

How is it stupid? Reagan was not his kin as far as I know.

No shite? Did they ask him if they were "kin"?

That wasn't one of Macklin's finest moments. At least it didn't come out very thoughtfully. Had pretty much a "big whoop" to it.

Rudy Macklin is an all time LSU great but he has never been one of my favorite people. The highlighted quote above is reflective of Rudy's flare for the dramatic.
Want to have fun with Rudy? Talk to him about the failures of the obama administration. I did once and it was a hoot.

I did the same thing on FB. He is one Obama loving sheep.
