My rant on Les Miles

At the time, I remember thinking who was Les Miles when we hired him. I watched the Ohio State vs Oklahoma State bowl game and thinking oh my god what did we do.
Then he arrived and we had to deal with Hurricane Katrina. He lost his opening game at TS on a Monday blowing a big halftime lead, but then ran the table only to lose to UGA after 11 consectutive weeks. Then we blew out Miami and killed their program.
Then 2006 came and he again did great. Yes we lost to Auburn and Florida, but those were top 10 teams on the road. We came back and beat top 10 Tennessee and Arkansas both on the road and blew out Notre Dame.
Then the BCS NC in 07.
Then that’s where things began to turn. Should have hired a top notch DC but instead promoted Doug Mallory and Bradley Dale Peveto to co dc’s. Kicked RP off the team with no qb to turn to other than transfer from Harvard. He got hurt and had to turn to Jarrett Lee. Had pick six’s and then had to turn to JJ. Beat a good GA Tech team in the bowl game.
2009 and 2010 were terrible. Clock mismanagement at Ole Miss then again at home with Tennessee in consecutive years. Finished strong and then got us to the BCS NC game in 2011, but did nothing different and got blown out in the superdome to Bama.
Mettenburger had a terrible 2012 season and then he did great in 2013 but the D took a turn for the worse . Then last year and this, both sides are bad, so we can’t rely on one or the other. Hence 7-4 season and another one headed that way.
Miles is a great man. Heard countless stories on what he has done for people, Sid Ortis, etc., but he is paid to coach the team and to graduate players/get them to the NFL. He has done great in recruiting, but not enough to keep up with Saban and also wasn’t able to coach up guys while here. He has missed on a lot of guys lately and that is showing up on the defensive depth. I don’t see things improving next year, although we will have a lot of talent back on offense and should finish with a top 5 recruiting class again.
Bigger issue I have is with Joe Alleva. Don’t trust him to make the right decision on who to hire. Regardless, I think we can do better. We have the talent, we just need to coaching. LSU recruits itself if we are winning.
I think there are coaches in our own division that I would like to see here. Keep in mind they don’t have Louisiana talent.
Whoever they get, would like to see Frank Wilson and Ed Orgeron retained. They are top notch recruiters and good coaches. I think Mullen, Freeze and Billema could all do better here.
Not sold on Sumlin or Malzahn. If they don’t have a QB that can run their system, they fail.
Not saying these guys would come here, but you have to ask. Chip Kelly, Pete Carroll, Brian Kelly, Chris Peterson, Gary Patterson.
Flame away.

Chip Kelly: NFL HC. Could win the NFCE this year.
Pete Carroll: NFL HC, Super Bowl winner
Brian Kelly: Why would he leave Notre Dame for LSU?
Chris Peterson: Northwest guy, refused to leave Boise State for over a decade, took over basically his dream job at Washington
Gary Patterson: Has been at TCU forever, turned down offers time and time again from bigger programs. Why would he want to leave now?

I agree, but did anyone think Saban would leave Miami for Bama before it happened? Same for Bret leaving Wisconsin. You have to ask. Doesn't hurt.

Seriously, where is the evidence to suggest this?

Miles isn't going anywhere. He will probably retire at LSU.
Unless shite hits the fan and we have consecutive losing seasons but even then I'm not sure.

I've never been a fan of Les Miles being our coach. But at this point, I'd like to see a new OC come in and get to do his job without any interference from Les. Maybe that new OC could work himself into the HC candidate when Les calls it quits.

Nikki Caldwell and Trent Johnson. He came from Duke. They are known for basketball. He has failed both times on those hires. I know, WBB, but still was not a good hire. JJ has been okay so far, but he is another coach that isn't an X's and O's guy. Same for Miles and Maneri, but he didn't hire those two.
Plus he let Les flirt with Michigan and Arkansas to only get a raise and contract extension. If Les wanted to go he should have let him.

I'm from Boise and know that he will never leave the NW because of his kid's need for a top notch hospital near by. UW, USCw, UCLA and Utah are probably the only places he will ever coach until his son passes.

I have watched the last 2 games and what I see is players being outplayed not bad coaching. Bama definitely had better talent on the field than we did. Arkansas did not have better talent but we were deflated from the Bama game then find out they are putting MS State away and then our players get out played.

I agree. but when has he done this since 2008. 2009 and 2010 he handicapped Crowton. Stud had one good year in 2011 but then did terrible in 2012. Then hired Cam and had a great 2013 but nothing since. He won't let an OC call the game and plays. So just leave Cameron here another year and after 2016 time to move on.

Well if players aren't playing well, the coach needs to put someone in that will. Not saying it is all on coaching, but you need to get guys ready. They looked unprepared. That is mostly on coaching.

Again who is responsible for hiring Cutcliffe?

How many coaches across the nation don't do the same thing though...is CLM really any better a man than any of them? Pretty sure he hasn't done anything that really separates him from other coaches.

Got us back in the tournament, had us ranked in the preseason and has a top 3 recruiting class including the #1 player in the nation and all but assured top pick in next year's draft.
It ain't about perfection, it's about direction. That is the problem with Miles. What direction are we headed?

Has a contract until 2019 and probably wont be going anywhere anytime soon. It will take back to back losing seasons for Alleva to make a move.

Precisely.

Not saying others don't. Just hear this a lot from defenders of Miles.

He is not paid to get players to the NFL.

I think that is how the recruits see it that are highly regarded.
