Misconception about Ronald Martin

Ronald Martin gets a lot of flak on here, and most of it is unwarranted.
Sure, he has made a few mistakes this year. But everyone on our defense has made mistakes. And when a Safety makes a mistake, it usually ends up being a big play because the safety is the last line of the defense. But Martin isnt nearly as bad as people on here are making and hes not even close to the biggest issue on the D. Our DL and LBs,except Kwon, are the main issues with our D, not Ronald Martin.
And part of the reason that Martin gets so much unwarranted flak is because he struggled last year. I agree he def struggled and I had high hopes for him because hes an elite athlete and made plays when he played early on in his career. But he had a rough year, and not just with football. His Dad passed away early on in the season and Ronald had to carry that the rest of the season. And then he hurt his foot, tried to play on it, and ended up breaking his foot. Some people almost rollover the season he had last year and wont allow their perception of Martin to change because of what he did last year.
But Ronald Martin is a completely different player this year than he was last year. And moving Mills to S full time was huge for Martin because doesnt have to be the deep safety to the strong WR side majority of the time anymore. Mills is typically the S that goes to the side with the bigger passing threat, which allows Martin to play more of the "SS" role, his natural position. He had to play that FS role last year because we didnt have anyone else that could, and its not his natural spot.
And hes been a much better player in his natural SS spot this season.
Stats(4 games)
-- 29 tackles (2nd on the team)
-- 4 PBUs (1st on the team)
-- 5 Passes Defended (1st on the team)
-- 1 INT, 1 FF, and 1 FR (tied for 1st on team)
Tre White has 3 PBUs and 4 Passes Defended, 2nd on the team. Nobody else has more than 2 of either.
Compare it to Eric Reids stats at LSU. In 2012, Reid had 9 Passes Defended total... in 13 games. In 2011, Reid had 5 Passed Defended total... in 13 games. Through 4 games, Martin has already matched Reids Passes Defended in 2011, and on pace to comfortably beat Reids total in 2012 (On pace for 16 Passes Defended). No Im NOT saying Martin > Reid or anything like that.
Just showing that Martin is a lot better than people give him credit for and is actually a pretty good player for us.

Sometimes people have less passes defended because they are that good at coverage. Just saying!

We've played one team with skills position players to challenge him and that team gave him the business.

The less you see of your Dbs. The better they are prolly doing. In general. Not always

Thank you for this perspective.
Much of your provided commentary is warranted, and some of it seems comes across as family-like (or hometown) defensiveness, which is understandable if that is the case. We all enjoy certain players from time to time for similar reasons - it is part of being human.
Ronald is a valuable part of the team, and is also subject to evaluation that you may not agree with.
That won't please you at times, but I am confident you will learn how to deal with it.

He still struggles with open field tackling and that has Been the biggest knock on him since he's come here.

I think Martin has actually played his best football this year, however, I think Jamal Adams is still better

yeah I used to give Martin shite, but gave him some love earlier in the year. he and Mills have made some nice plays on passes over the middle.

I agree that he gets more shite than warranted. He is just inconsistent

peterson had 15 one year at LSU

KG5989, I agree completely. He hasn't been perfect, but he is playing the best ball of his career. I'm sure he has graded out well. Other than Welter and the DTs he catches a lot of crap on here. He is not the problem.
Somebody on here today said LSUs DEs were beastly this year. I don't know what games they were watching. They look good as compared to the DTs, but that is about it.Another LB besides Welter is not exactly lighting it up either.
Martin and J Collins have both played much better than last year and sadly D Thomas was as well.

he seems slow at times. I'm almost surprised Chavis didn't turn him into a LB.

I think he is one of better DB's. Between Mills, Martin and now with the emergence of Adams it's hard to pick which two deserve to start. All are very good and can't go wrong with any of them.

He is slow. He reminds me of Karnell Hatcher in 2010.

He's too slow. I think he is a decent football player, but I'd rather see him in a Harry Coleman hybrid role than safety.

I really disagree. If anything I think that he has been overshadowed by players playing both better and worse. Overall I think he has looked improved over last year.

Hard to say he's improved with the competition we've played. Only team worth anything is Miss St.... We think, and he didn't look great in that game. His speed is below par for LSU and for the SEC at safety.
The Ole Miss game did it for me, he showed that night he lacked the ball skills and instincts needed to be a starter at LSU.
Him being smart and "heady" would make up for a lot if the D Line was legit, but they are not! 26 will be exploited soon, if they leave him out there. It's coming.
I hope he thrives, I'm cheering for him, I'm just not confident in him.

Yes 13, no one can improve from a year where he was injured and his dad died.
