I've been going to LSU games since 1969 and I believe every LSU coach from Cholly Mac on has referenced his linebackers as Mike (Middle) / Sam (Strong) / Will (Weak). This leads me to believe that this is a generic coaching term used by all. I've lived in different college/pro cities around the US since graduation, but I've never heard any coaches at any other schools/teams refer to their linebackers this way.

If it's not a commonly used designation, how does this tradition continue coach after coach at LSU?

Mike/Sam/Will is very very common, but not universal. Coaches who use hybrids have different terminology sometimes.

It's common.. Where ever the TE goes is strong side, generally. We used the same terms in high school.

That is the basic 4-3 terminology.

Pretty standard terms, but not for non-standard (in historical sense) defense (eg, "Middle" and 3 - 4 defenses).

We used that terminology in high school. It's a fairly generic designation. We also referred to one of our defensive ends as "blood end". I've not heard that term anywhere else.

Thanks all. I remember thinking the first time I heard it as a kid, that it was an LSU thing since the middle linebacker was "Mike". I guess that's stuck in my head ever since.

Its a commonly used designation. It is not an LSU tradition. You don't know much football. Not your fault
