Mid season grades
Posted by cforester821 on 10/17/17 at 7:30 pm264
Figured we could do a middle of the season report card for the whole team
QB: C+
Etling has been serviceable. Only one interception through 7 games is a huge plus. He’s missed some big plays, however, and needs to improve on his check downs and a intermediate game. Deep balls have improved.
RBs: C+
I expected more out of Guice this year, but injuries don’t help. Williams has been a bright spot, however.
OL: C+
attrition in the off season, injuries, youth all over gives a recipe for disaster. They’ve improved mightily over the past two games, however. Charles at LT will be an all-SEC player.
WRs: C
there has been some poor route running, but they really stepped it up against Auburn. The sweep guys have done great with running the ball.
F backs/tight ends: B
Love how we’ve incorporated these guys in the passing games and shifts. Carter has been great.
DBs: B+
Man have here guys come on as of late. 11 pass break ups in one game and holding Stidham to only 2-13 in the second half of the Auburn game. Greedy has been a bright spot too and it’s good to see Jackson and Toliver really step it up.
ILBs: B-
An A+++ for White and a D for Alexander. White will be an all American. Taylor has shown promise, also.
OLBs: B
Thompson has done a great job of generating pressure. Key is finally getting in shape and affecting the QB again.
DL: B-
Gilmore has stepped up his game this year. Still not as strong as Alexander, but improved. Lacouture has been ok. Racked up on sacks that have been pushed into him. Lawrence is the obvious bright spot here. Whole different defense with him not there.
Special Teams: C
Rosenberg has come on and we finally are kicking the ball out of the end zone on kickoffs. Culp has settled in also.
Canada: B-
The shifts have grown on me. They obviously create opportunities with a down year on o-line.
Aranda: B-
Never really thought the early defensive woes were on Aranda. You lost two first rounders on defense, your starting two ILBs, and Godchaux. You’re gonna have growing pains. Great in game adjustment in the Auburn game.
Orgeron: C+
Way to turn the season around, Coach. Every new coach takes their lumps. Recruiting needs to pick up, though. Keep winning and that will fix itself.
What y’all got?

We need a good recruiting class this year
If there is one area O needs to deliver, its in recruiting. That truly is his best aspect.
I would be a bit disappointing if our class didn't rank in the top 15

Although I generally don't care for these threads because they usually lead to player bashing, I really can't argue with you on anything you said there. However, I think the grades across the board are improving, and the next week will be telling. If we dominate ole' piss (which I believe we will), it will make for an interesting end of season. If we struggle, it will be difficult to maintain optimism. If we lose, it will be an immediate full on shite show again.

Only disagree on Aranda and the RB's. Aranda is an A- at worst in my book and the RB's are a D+ at best. The RB's just aren't producing at all this season and they've been more than likely the least explosive (in terms of long carries) running backs in the country. Our running game overall isn't bad solely because of our WR's breaking off big jet sweeps

The RBs not producing, whether because of Oline or scheme, is reason for struggles

This. Especially running between the tackles. Guice getting healthy will help that. He looked good in the second half against Auburn.

It would be an epic fricking disaster of a failure if we didn't end up in the top 15.
Outside of top 8 would be a bit disappointing.
Miles' lowest ranked class of his tenure was ranked 14 when he only signed 13 players because Saban left him a wet bag of shite on his way out the door on Christmas Eve
Seriously, WTF is he getting paid for if he doesn't coach and can't get AT LEAST top 10 classes every year???

He's getting paid because he talks like us. That and the binder.

Nobody gives a frick about grades

I agree about being outside of the top 8 being disappointing

O gets no better than a D

I saw that Rivals had the 2005 class ranked at 22 (not sure which recruiting site is more reliable) but you're certainly right about Saban leaving him a wet bag of shite on his way out of town.
I also agree that if o can't pull in top 10 classes, he's a waste of time.

If O pulls in a class ranked 30th you will have his die hards screaming that stars don't matter.

That's only if you are grading on a curve from last year or on potential.
The D did fine against a horrid BYU offense and FCS UTC. Against Miss St, Syracuse and Troy the D gave up 385 yards on average and 29 points per game.
Against Florida (a bad offense) after LSU scored to open the second half and take a 17-3 lead we had a chance to put the game away with a defensive stop. Instead the Gators drove the field for a TD and took away all of the momentum.
The Auburn game post 1st QTR was a masterful job of coaching and play and proved why he's a great coach.
Aranda has had a big challenge this season with youth, injuries and losing some great players. He's said as much. He's proving that he has the ability to get these guys going in the right direction and hopefully it continues. JMHO

quote:I love this dude is having a good year. He came in highly rated and probably was not as talented as his star rating indicted. But instead of falling to the bottom of the depth chart and transferring to a smaller school he did the hard thing and worked his arse off and soaked up every bit of knowledge he could get out of pete jenkins. He'll get a shot in the NFL but i would not be surprised to see him as a DL coach some time in the future.

Almost every aspect of the team is trending up - I would like more production out of the RB spot - it's clear now that Guice hasn't been 100% all year - maybe he was close at the beginning, but I've made no secret - I think he was maybe 90, 95 percent healthy for BYU - there were at least 2, if not 3 runs where I was convinced he would have housed in 2016 - just a shoestring tackle kept him from scoring.
Williams has done well at times, but overall, we don't seem to be able to run at will between the tackles or even off tackle or counters, with the running backs. And that hurts us on play action. We've manufactured a lot of rushing yardage off the jet sweep and reverse action, but that tends to be big play, feast/famine type stuff.
The healthier Guice is, the better that situation will be in the back half of the season. The entire offense will look better - as it will with the apparent improvement of OL play as the young, yet talented, players get more experience.

quote:he did not look like himself vs MSU (shitty game all around for the entire team); even games after that he was not running the same style as last year.

Florida game he got a couple of runs that reminded you of last year and the AU he looked even better. hopefully he is trending upward in his recovery; whatever it is it isn't keeping him off the field so hopefully it is healing.
Key had his best game vs AU so if both of those guys are getting close to 100% for the back end of the schedule we could be in good shape.
