The Oversigning Bowl.
On the podcast last week I mentioned that if I was athletic director* Michigan would not have signed up to play Alabama at any juncture because it's stupid to take a knife to an oversigning fight. With the LSU-Bama game of the year already in hype mode (both teams have this week off), Ramzy states the obvious:

The storyline that probably won't make it anywhere near the national discussion is that Saban and Miles each play the recruiting game with a stacked deck: For every four players that almost every other program in the country admits to school, Alabama and LSU each take in five.

While it won't happen, the discussion of oversigning should be one of the storylines for this particular game. LSU and Alabama should be ranked at or near the top of the polls, and every year - not just in 2011.

Both programs have top-tier head coaches and both schools - unlike the one in Columbus - are at or above the Southeastern Conference's pay grade for proven assistant coaches and coordinators. Baton Rouge and Tuscaloosa are practically required to be on every elite high school recruit's list of possibilities.

But what ensures that LSU and Alabama should be among the elite of the elite is that both have installed a system that gives them significantly less recruiting risk than most of their competitors in recruiting.

Oversigning recruits every year has given both schools built-in second and third-chances where talent acquisition is concerned. They get refunds on their bad bets, and their depth charts are proof that it works.

It's stupid to play a team that gets to look at 25% more players than you do over the course of a recruiting cycle. If you have to in a bowl game you have to but if I'm looking for an opponent it's not going to be one with an inbuilt advantage due to skeeziness. That goes double when you're coming off the attrition/recruiting problems Rodriguez left Michigan.

This is a common area of attack since they have had no success on the field.

They are so mad at Coach Miles for not taking the Michigan job. They think the Michigan Job is the best job in College Football. They found out it is not.

Doesn't it take skill to oversign and retain? If you don't let them play, they can go elsewhere. You have to signd tham and keep them.

I think it says something about your program that someone would rather go to a great team and ride the bench on the hope that his number would be called as opposed to guaranteed playing time with a mediocre team.

In other words, they mad.

Some teams outside of the SEC that signed more recruits this year than LSU and Alabama's 22 each:

FSU 29
USC 30
Clemson 29
Oregon 23
Notre Dame 23
Ohio State, The 23
UNC 25
TxTech 27
Washington 23
UVA 26
TCU 25
OkieLite 27
Iowa 24
Rutgers 24
Kansas 27
BC 23
UCF 29
Illinois 27
Cincinnati 24
SMU 27

Over the last 5 recruiting classes LSU has signed 127 players while Oregon has signed 121. "125%"?

But they want to single out LSU and Bama...

Maybe if Michigan had players good enough to leave early for the NFL, they could sign more.

...Yeah, they mad.

Big Ten fans, especially tOSU and Michigan fans, routinely lie and show the hypocrisy and lack of integrity they have on this issue. How is this for "skeeziness". They count ONE SINGLE PLAYER that re-sign out of JUCO as 2 players on the team. They also count players that sign but never make it to campus because of a failure to qualify. Finally, they count players that sign but never make it to campus due to going MLB instead. If you look at Bama and LSU's signees list you literally see at least a dozen or more signees in a given 4 year periods THAT NEVER MADE IT ON CAMPUS that are counted as players on the team. Just shows you how intellectually dishonest these self righteous Big Ten jackasses are that make the oversigning argument.

Is there some sort of rule against oversigning?

There is in the SEC, but I'm not sure about the conferences that complain about the SEC.

The author is no math wizard. If we typically signed an extra player for every four we are supposed to sign, we would average signing 31.25 players/year. I can't remember LSU ever signing more than 28, and that was once. We typically sign one or two over the 25 max.

Those that can win within the systemn complain about the system. If they're tired of the SEC controlling college football, the World Series is on. Of course baseball players cheat as much as anyone so I could see why it wouldn't interest them since BIG 10 is the piety of football.
