From the Advocate:

quote:

Mainieri said he will announce his pitching rotation on Thursday, adding it would be either Jared Poche, Alex Lange or Caleb Gilbert starting the first game against the Wolverines

So I was looking at what UVU did against some of the better pitchers they went up against this year. North Dakota had a kid that will be a top 10 round pick, lefty in the low 90s, that UVU touched up pretty good.

Coincidentally, North Dakota is dropping their program and that kid wants to pitch in the SEC next season before going pro. I have more info on him in the baseball recruiting thread on the RB.

Would not be surprised in the slightest if Poche started.

gilbert is the only one of the 3 who wouldn't be on a full week's rest, correct?

I agree and said it last week during the SEC tourney. This is not a particularly dominant LSU team so I think Mainieri will go a safer route in terms of picking a pitcher with experience in handling the pressure of a first game in the NCAA tournament.

But then he may see the forecast and completely abandon that thought. Who knows.

Well, this at least tells us that Mainieri sees Gilbert as our third or fourth starter rather than a guy out of the pen.

That leaves us with 2, maybe 3 reliable arms out the pen.

Newman has obviously been great.
Bugg seems to have gotten over his troubles.
Stallings had his best performance of the season last weekend but can be inconsistent.
Reynolds has been so-so.
Bain?
Norman?

I'm guessing PM is trying to groom Latz for the 4th starter role. That leaves Smith and Valek as long relief guys.

Devall is never going to pitch to more than a batter or two. Still surprising to see him not at least face a batter or two in the tournament. I guess there are other guys PM wanted to make sure got some work.

I can see where that would be an issue if I said top ten. I said top ten rounds.

FYI -- the Utah guys either hit or strikeout--
Against top notch pitching I bet we see them
K a lot more than get hits. We just need to not walk a lot of opposing batters.

From the way they have handled Latz he would be a starter in name only I don't see him going more than 4 innings this year.

If the weather forecast holds, I would't be shocked if its Gilbert or Latz with the plan to dip into the pen early due to either rain or fatigue.
