Who gives a frick about Louisiana? shite-hole of a state. Complete shite-hole.

I was born in Texas. I was raised in Texas. I wanted to go to Texas. I ended up in Louisiana.

Sounds horrible doesn't it? I thought the exact same thing... until I realized what LSU stood for.

While many people find it funny to crack jokes about the shite-hole that is known as Louisiana, people that live here would immediately disagree, and rightfully so. Being from Texas, I didn't know a lot about Louisiana. I knew that Katrina destroyed New Orleans, and that supposedly the Government didn't care. The city was run-over with low income family's, welfare moochers, and criminals, and for all that was good, we rid the city of those who were destroying it.

Boy was I wrong.

Louisiana is in despair. New Orleans is picking up speed but the destruction caused by Katrina is still evident. On your college essay's it always asks you to write "What challenge have you had to deal with and how did you overcome it?. a question so many of my classmates now at School in Austin or college station filled space, stating their communication problems with their superiors. Not my new classmates. I met people who lost everything. A girl who came home to find her cat drowned hanging out of an air-vent. People who lost their homes, their Grandparents ashes, family photo's from past generations. People who lived in FEMA trailers, and people who moved to Houston for months until New Orleans drained. As an outsider, you ask "why would you want to live in a place like that?", but once you are on the inside you understand. New Orleans is a beautiful city, and for those of you who have never been on LSU's campus, you are missing one of the most breathtaking pieces of land this side of the Mississippi. The culture is something that makes Louisiana the most unique state in this country. People are friendly, and its genuine. Walk around the tailgates at a LSU football game wearing a Texas jersey. I promise you will walk to the stadium with a stomach full of exquisite cuisine, a beer in your hand, and another in your pocket to watch the band run down the hill, all which came at no expense to you.

The people of Louisiana are in a constant struggle. The Government never came to help, but the same hands going through the ticket office booth in Omaha are the same hands that refuse to let the state fall by the wayside. Louisianian's don't have a lot to look to in times of crisis, as a matter of fact, there is really only one shining beacon. LSU.

Read articles about Katrina from a New Orleans newspaper. I can't count the number of times you will hear "We lost everything. The only things I was able to save were my LSU season tickets and 3 or 4 purple and gold shirts.". Those are the stories you don't hear in Texas. LSU unites the entire state and is an icon for all those in times of trouble. When things go wrong, every person in the state reverts back to the Football team, the baseball team, a place where everything that is going on in their lives can be put on hold for a weekend. Our fans are proud of their state, their school, and their sports. Despite accusations of being hostile assholes, you will find more genuine people trying to dodge the everyday stresses of life then anything else. They are there to support the only thing that supports them. I love LSU, I love Louisiana. I never thought I would say it, but now that I have I understand why there is such a disparity among Texans and their neighbors. We don't care whats bigger, whats better. We don't care if our Government is screwed up and yours works like a clock. We are all one family held together with purple and gold glue, just trying to have a good time and forget all the negative things that have affected our lives and our state. LSU is Louisiana.

It was an honor to play against you in the CWS. You have a great team and I hope you got a chance to enjoy the party LSU brought to Omaha. You are always welcome to come down to Baton Rouge on a Saturday night and truly grasp the culture that is LSU. 140,000 people, doing the same as the 15k who made it to Nebraska, breathing and exuding all that we have come to know as our alma mater. It is an experience you will never forget, and one that I, a native Texan, would not trade for the world.

Watch the last 30 seconds or so of this video with Paul Mainieri talking to Mahtook at bp.

"Louisiana people are amazing aren't they? Everybody just looks after each other and takes care of each other, has fun."

One thing I liked about that video is that it sounds like Dean may be coming back.

He should probably figure out how to use apostrophes first. But I agree, well written.

WOW

couldn't have said it any better myself. in fact I couldn't begin to touch that.

i took the opposite route. Grew up in LA and moved to Texas. Almost every day and every week people ridicule the fact that I am from Louisiana, we've all heard them. And they always ask, why does everyone in Louisiana worship LSU.

This is why. As he put it, we don't beautiful scenery, notable national landmarks, our phony politicians ran what little we had into the ground over the years, and we've been destroyed by hurricanes for the last few years....and what is the one light at the end of the tunnel, the one thing not all but most of us can relate to.....it's LSU.

that's why our fanbase is the uncontested best fanbase out there.

I am one to speak when it comes to agreeing with the man. I was born in Ohio and lived there until I was 5. Ofcourse I was too young to even think about college, but I had a lot of relatives who were alum at Ohio State and I am sure that I would have been pressured into going there if I were older. I then moved to Florida and lived there until I was 19. I guess the point of my whole life story is to say that I have seen and experienced Ohio State, University of Florida and Florida State (some of the nations most prominent universities) and have been pressured either by family or friends into going to either of them. However, all it took was one trip to LSU that got me hooked. I have only been in Louisiana for 3 (going on 4) years now, but I wish I could claim this state as my home state. I am not sure exactly what it is, but the loyalty and tradition that comes to Louisiana's turf is absolutely unmatched!!!

Similar story here. I grew up mainly in the midwest, but all of my family is from Baton Rouge. By the time I graduated high school, I was brainwashed to the point where no school I visited could compare to LSU. I'm still a student at LSU and often wish I could call the state my home too.

i think during the eye of the storm documentary after katrina, carville was talking about how if you removed the major university of every state, it would affect louisiana more than any of the others. i moved here 5 years ago after having been born and raised in nj and then lived in california for 5 years and this state is special, and lsu has a lot to do with that.

Great post. I remember in 2007 I was right on the edge of the studnts section midway up the upper bowl. Across the aisle from us were 5 guys in UK Football blue t-shirts. I said to them you guys are a week early and in the wrong spot. They laughed and said how each year they would pick one game to go to and this year it was LSU/UF. They could not believe the people and the atmosphere. When I say they were speechless I'm not joking around. They literally had no words. They were full to the brim with boudin, jamabalaya, bbq, boiled seafood, blackened gator, and all sorts of other cuisine and beer. They hadn't spent a dime all day on anything. And they weren;t even our opponent. They said they had been to over 35-40 different stadiums and this was hands down the best atmosphere and the nicest people. Louisiana is truly one of the greatest places imo.

I have been living in Texas for 14 years off and on. I lived in East Texas for 5 years. I used to be self conscience when people would make negative comments about Louisiana. After living in East Texas, let me tell you Texas just covers up their issues with poverty and back woods people and ignorance. I think Texas and Lousiana are both great states with rich cultures. Both have a few issues too.

I know we have our share of arrogant, obnoxious fans but I have always believed this fan base is about pulling for the Tigers win or lose not ridiculing or putting down the opponent's fans or state so we can feel superior. Sure we fire back when attacked but again it is about pulling for LSU.

I was born in Louisiana, but grew up in Southern California since I was 4. All my relatives live in Louisiana, so we went back to visit every summer, then I went to LSU for college. I remember feeling embarassed to tell people I was from Louisiana as a kid, but now I can't wait to tell everyone of my proud heritage.

I live in Texas now and tell everyone I'm from Louisiana, that I went to LSU and I proudly fly my LSU flag in my front yard every day. My kids were all born here in Texas, but they will be raised to claim Louisiana as there heritage...
