LSU's new defensive scheme

I have read a lot of technical posts about Aranda's scheme and, on paper, it sounds like a good fit for us.
I know last years scheme (or whatever Steele did) left our secondary confused a lot. yes, it was a change from Chavis but Raymond was a constant. the net result was that LSU was 12th in the SEC in pass defense. imo, with the DB's we have that was pretty poor.
since this the our 3rd different DC in three years what should we expect, esp. in the early season games? will our learning curve be as difficult as last year? it seems we will have more LB's (or DE's) on the field at any one time and that should bolster our run D but will that adversely affect our pass D (esp the short passes where these guys have to cover)?
I hope those of you with playing experience will share some knowledge.

Last years poor secondary play was more about poor scheme than it was the learning curve. I'm sure there will still be a few blown coverages, but expect us to be in the top 3 in the sec in passing yards per game.

Too much is usually made of a new scheme. The truth about defense is if you can't win 1v1 match ups up front and make plays scheme doesn't do a whole lot for you. Now I do think being able to create the most favorable match ups for the situation goes a long way in helping that, but you still have to be able to beat a block and make a play.

I'd imagine with our strength in the secondary we will be in 3-3-5 alot more than a 3-4. Considering Adams is a stud tackler he would most likely walk down into the box if dictated by formation. The base defense is a 3 man front. Formation and offensive personel will dictate the amount of LBs and DBs that are on the field.

Anytime I saw us play zone last season I wanted to choke out Steele. You dont play zone with the talent we have in the DB corps.

Although there were a lot of blown coverages and miscommunications, last year's lack of a pass rush didn't help the secondary very much.
I fully expect the front seven to not only get more pressure but to lock down the trenches against the rush much better which will allow more leeway against the pass.

You have to play it sometimes. Just not as much as he did.

Gotta play zone in this day and age of football, especially with the propensity of the Spread. For example, Bama sits in a Cover 3 for the majority of the game, if not, it's a single high man coverage.

Last year's defense was awful. Still not convinced our LBs and S's can cover the pass at all. It didn't look like they could last year but maybe that was scheme.

It drove me nuts. I rewatched the Mississippi state game the other day. Dak was feasting every time we were in Zone. Ole Miss was the same way too.
Thank god Auburn hired Steele.

Last years poor pass defense centered on lack of pressure on the QB. When the QB has less time to pick you apart then their offensive effectiveness goes down and their options go down. To make matters worse we were not that good on run defense either but better than pass defense.
Everyone has heard the term coverage sack due to the QB not having anywhere to throw the ball. The opposite effect is that the DB's look real good when the DL is chasing the QB all over the field and driving his head in the ground 5-6 times a game

We improved a lot rushing the passer. It wasn't great but wasn't horrible either. We will be Better this year. We also had 2 freshman corners they played a lot. As talented as they are there is a learning curve. They will be more comfortable. Hopefully we see more m2m. Out CB 's are athletic enough to cover. Ya maybe zone is needed at times with the offenses but I believe u just have to stay on top of them and tackle well n space

I like Aranda but I'm concerned about the transition from 4-3 to 3-4... there is a learning curve and our key guys need to learn new positions. We certainly have the talent to succeed but any major scheme change is difficult to get used to. I'm hoping we go through the ups and downs early while finding a way to win games and have it all ironed out by November

Aranda did convert Wisconsin to his 3-4 his first year and they finished in the Top 10 of Total Defense. If he can do it there, I think he can get it done here.

Bama uses disguised pattern match hybrid man/zone, quarters, halves and variety of other.
