LSU's financial crisis

There seems to be some critism of Mike Martin's decision to curtail tuition reductions for out of state LSU alumni. The sad fact is, he has no choice. His options are limited because the state funding for the university is being drastically cut.
Folks, the problem is this. The legislature controls tuition, not the university. LSU has the lowest state support in the country. Even behind Mississippi State which is next to last.
Compare LSU's tuition to other "State supported schools" and you will see what a bargain LSU is.
However, if the legislature would allow LSU to set the tuition, and it was raised slightly, LSU would be able to survive the massive state budget cuts. If not, there will be massive cuts in academic programs and even some colleges will be eliminated.
Folks, this is serious. If you do not want LSU to shrink and you love LSU as so many of you profess, please contact your representatives and make them aware that the state's flagship university can not survive as a viable university with the massive state support curtailments and the low tuition.
You may not want to hear this but unfortunately this is the absolute truth.
We americans usually don't solve a problem until it it has developed into a crisis. However, this is already a crisis and most people are not aware of its magnitute yet.
Please, do me one favor. Don't bash me until you find out the facts. And then, don't complain, do something to help LSU maintain its position as a quality university.

Mike Martin was the worst thing to happen to LSU. If O'Keefe was here this would be a different story.

The legislature controls tuition, not the university
requirements for TOPS need to be somewhere between current standards and the old pre-1997 LSU Honors Scholarship numbers
hell, they could even go back to the Top 10% Scholarship system they used to have

This should be good.
Explain.

Reason we are in this mess is because the admin. doesnt really care about the students. And tuition might be low but the fees are ridiculous and I haven't seen another school with as high as fees per semester

I am native New Orleanean LSU alum living in Texas whose son is now a Soph. LSU discounts out-of-state tuition 75% to alums kids. This reduction is allowing high test score kids to go to LSU instead of in state school, making LSU the clear winner. Studies have shown those kid graduate at a 83% rate within 9 semesters and are higher donors. The TOPPS requirements are a joke and let's compare their graduate rates. If you want to raise revenue, raise the TOPPS requirement.

As much as I admired O'Keefe, YOU couldn't be more wrong.

Agree with this. My issue is not about the money for me personally.

Since my contacting a state rep is fruitless, what else could I do?
I am truly disappointed. I will be honest here. I did not want my children to go to LSU because even though I love it personally, I thought they could do better. LSU is not respected academically nationally or even in the southeast.
My oldest child really wanted to go there and I gave in. It's their life. What I saw is a different University than the one I attended. In a much better way. Better students. Higher standards. More out of state kids with high academics.
This is a setback for the University. My opinion is not personal.
So again, what can I do?

I am a graduate living in Georgia. Both of my grandmothers graduated from LSU in the 30’s along with countless relatives. My daughter is an honor student here and maintains a 4.0 gpa. She has expressed interest in attending LSU, having been exposed to our university culture during football games and other trips home. Without this scholarship how can my university compete now with UGA and instate tuition and the State’s Hope Scholarship. Without question she will have many options and have scholarship offers but these monies are usually portioned out; so without a Hope Scholarship the base tuition becomes very important.
This is very disappointing; with this short sidedness LSU will be losing out on some of the best students!

Then she is not affected by any of this. She will easily qualify for out-of-state exemption.

The best students will get merit scholarships as your honor student would.
The only people losing out on this are the bottom of the litter who will no longer be given things just because daddy was a frat star back in the day.

LSU has been consistently increasing tuition.
This is a piece of the answer but is not the silver bullet.

Tuition is on the rise, like 10% per year now.
LSU needs to stay cheap because they dont have much else to offer.

Good glory, Rockyn, are you that insensitive? My kid certainly was not bottom of the litter. My kid had a 3.44 and wanted to go to LSU. I just wrote a $13K check to LSU for him to go which includes the tuition, dorm, books and meal plan. A 75% reduction in the out-of-state portion of the aggreage $7300 tuition sure would have helped. Luckily, I have been saving. What if you just lost your job like a lot have this year and you wanted to send your kid to LSU from out of state. That extra $4-5K per semester hits your grocery bill pretty hard.

I can appreciate the severity of the crisis, however, LSU may be its worst enemy. Look at the salaries of its administration in Thomas Boyd Hall. Look at their jobs....They take care of their own...There are Directors with fewer than five (5) staff members...and with 6-figure salaries....Look at how staffing has increased significantly in the past 10 years with no other improvement. They eliminate grounds-keepers and janitors who actually did a great job, and will offer little savings. Until the administration bites the bullet themselves, let them eat cake....

When does this go into effect? Immediately?

Some departments just might be a little over-staffed and some employees a little over paid?
Maybe the University is spending a little too much on contruction and new facilities, without planning for how they will afford to maintain and staff all of the new wonderfulness?
Not to mention benefits. But I realize that's a sacred cow.
Compared to private industry, where, since 2008, staff reductions, pay cuts, insurance increases, and position eliminations/consolidations have been the norm.
I see private industry doing what is necessary to survive and acknowledging the prevailing economic realities, and I see states threatening to remove things they're supposed to provide, while never considering making some of the same moves as folks on the private side (cutting administrative expenses/overhead/over-staffing).
Signed, LSU Alum, former LSU employee.

Same boat. Mine was almost exactly same GPA. Tried to get them to go somewhere "better."
And insensitive is only part of the story. If he thinks they will replace the 3.44 students with in staters with the same GPAs etc. he is dreaming.
