After looking closely at our schedule this year, although no doubt it's one of the toughest in the country, it sets up very nicely in terms of who we play when and who our opponents play the week prior. For obvious reasons, Oregon (because it's the first game), Northwestern, and Western Kentucky aren't worth discussing.

1. Sept 3 - Oregon

2. Sept 10 - Northwestern State

3. Sept 15 - @Mississippi State
Although it's a short week on the road, LSU is coming off Northwestern State, whereas MSU is coming off a road game at Auburn. LSU should be able to rest a good deal of their starters.

4. Sept 24 - @West Virginia
Definitely a tough game, but the benefit of playing MSU on a Thursday gives LSU extra time to prepare/rest. Plus, West Virginia comes off playing @Maryland, by no means a gimme win for them

*Interesting side note - West Virginia faces Crowton the week before. Wonder how much Kragthorpe will try to open up the playbook against WVU?

5. Oct 1 - Kentucky
Kentucky plays Florida the week before, which should be a very physical contest.

6. Oct 8 - Florida
Florida plays Alabama the week before. Florida will be lucky to come out of that game completely healthy, whereas LSU should have an easy win against Kentucky.

7. Oct 15 - @Tennessee
Tennessee plays Georgia the week before, a tough game.

8. Oct 22 - Auburn
Auburn will be coming off tough games against Florida and Arkansas the two weeks before LSU.

9. Nov 5 - @Alabama
Although Bama is coming off a bye week, so is LSU. No scheduling advantage for either school.

10. Nov 12 - Western Kentucky

11. Nov 19 - @ Ole Miss
Ole Miss is coming off a game against La Tech, but we will have played an inferior opponent in WKU as well.

12. Nov 25 - Arkansas
Both teams have a short week, but Arkansas will be coming off a home game against MSU, a tougher game than LSU will play against Ole MIss.

13. Dec 3 - SEC Championship
Should LSU make it, the benefit off playing Arkansas on Friday is that it gives LSU an extra day to prepare for whoever the opponent is.

The point is, as tough as LSU's schedule is, no opponent we play will have a competitive advantage because of their respective schedules. We only play one team that plays a cupcake the week prior (Ole Miss) and we play Western Kentucky that same week. We only play one team coming off a bye (Alabama) and we have a bye the same week. Other than Ole Miss, every conference opponent will be coming off a conference game the week before they play LSU. Frankly, we need all the luck we can get when it comes to this schedule, and I think it sets up as well as it possibly can in LSU's favor.

I usually try to look at this for the year, but did not get around to it yet. It does set up very well for who the opponent played before, but overall, our schedule is brutal due to who we play and where. Plus, right out the gate and the first month of games is very tough. I usually like a month to make adjustments.

At least We dont have one good team after another. We should make it to the SEC championship game. Doesnt mean we will.

Haha when you said Northwestern I didn't know you meant Northwestern State. NW would have been worth discussing with Dan Persa

Good post. Nicely done.

That is definitely the "glass is half full" analysis of our schedule. Nothin wrong with that, tho.

My "glass is half empty" counter:

1. Sept 3 - Oregon
Another oppentent with their back's to the wall (see UNC)

2. Sept 10 - Northwestern State

3. Sept 15 - @Mississippi State
Thursday night games seem to be an advantage for the underdog.

4. Sept 24 - @West Virginia
Back-to-back ranked teams on the road. Their offense will either be in transition...or very good.

5. Oct 1 - Kentucky
Sandwich game between WV and UF:

6. Oct 8 - Florida
Florida loses to Bama the week before and will be fighting harder than ever to prevent back-to-back losses.

7. Oct 15 - @Tennessee
Might figure out the "rule of 11" by mid October.

8. Oct 22 - Auburn
Will be coming off two losses in a row. Will they fight or fold?

9. Nov 5 - @Alabama
Can Miles beat Saban back-to-back?

10. Nov 12 - Western Kentucky

11. Nov 19 - @ Ole Miss
Nutt could still have this job...can't wait for that guy to go away.

12. Nov 25 - Arkansas
Robbed of a night game, this one kicks off at 1:30.

13. Dec 3 - SEC Championship
Rematch against Florida? Might have to beat em twice.

14. BCS Championship Game
Forgot one. We own this baby.

I can easily see LSU winning all of their games as much as they could lose as many as 4 with this schedule. The one major thing that we cannot measure that makes a big difference is injuries.

OOC college football schedules do matter. When Bear Bryant took over at Alabama he rebuilt the 'Bama football program by staying away from going on the road and playing the better college football teams. Take a look back at what he did then.

Quote from: From Wikipedia.

quote:

In 1961 Bear Bryant's work in rebuilding the Alabama football program, which won only eight games in the four years before his arrival, was complete.[3] Alabama went 11-0, winning its fifth SEC title and first Associated Press national championship. The Tide defense allowed only 22 points in the regular season; only three other SEC teams allowed fewer than 120 points.[2] Only twice all year, against Tulane and in the Sugar Bowl against Arkansas, did Alabama win by less than ten points. Bama's 34-3 victory over Tennessee was its first since 1954 and only its second since 1947.

1961 OOC Bama oppenets
Tulane
NC State
Houston
Richamand

1962 OOC Bama opponents.
Tulane
Houston
Tulsa
Miami

Alabama 1961 Crimson tide team record was 11-0
Beating Arkansas 10-0 in the Sugar Bowl.

Alabama 1962 Crimson tide record was 9-1,losing to
Georgia Tech L 6-7
Beating Oklahoma in the Orange Bowl 17-0.

Oregon, Miss State, West Virginia on the road is a very tall order. LSU is still only a college football team, tough football teams on the road can get you beat.

I respectfully disagree, hard schedules matter. You play good teams on the road, you better be prepared to lose. The SEC is hard enough. I don't see the intelligence in making LSU's schedule any harder.

That game is very important. Short week, on the road, Thursday night, spells disaster. Ranked teams usually fall on the road on Thursday nights.

I agree it bodes well for playing west virginia after the TH game with Miss State.

Last several years LSU has always gotten all it can handle from Ole Miss and Arkansas. Seems like we are a walking mash unit by then.
