This weekend officially marks the greatest time in all of South Louisiana; The merger of LSU baseball and basketball season! As LSU proudly takes the field in the friendly confines of Alex Box, the basketball team will go to the hostile home of the Tennessee Volunteers.

Tennessee is only 12-14 overall, but do not let their overall record make you feel like this game is a cake walk. Home Tennessee and road Tennessee are two different animals.

At home Tennessee is 11-1 with wins over Florida, South Carolina, and Kentucky. Their lone home loss came to Vanderbilt a month ago.

Defensively, Tennessee is worse than LSU, but in their three big home wins, they held 2 of the three to under 70 points. Really looking at their stats overall doesn't paint the real picture of the challenge LSU faces. On offense, the Vols rarely turn the ball over and shot the ball well at the FT line.

From KenPom.com:

From LSUbutt:

quote:

They are a heavy guard oriented team. Their best interior player is 6'4, but he's a bull. They have a 6'9 player (Alexander) who will most likely start but he may not even play double digit minutes. They have 2 other 6'7-6'8 guys in Kasongo and Reese that will play, but again, they may only play a few minutes. UT will want to push the tempo, shoot 3's, try to create turnovers.

The scary part is that they are abysmal on the road, but actually quite good at home. They have wins against UK, South Carolina, and Florida at home. They had a player that got hurt Thursday night against UK and I'm pretty positive it was Baulkman. Not sure if he will play, but he averages 9 a game and is a solid player.

Really though, LSU is a far superior team. UT beat Kentucky because Kentucky jumped out to a 21-point lead, got lazy, and started fouling. UT is an exceptional FT shooting team, one of the best in the nation. Against South Carolina, they were 30/32 from the FT line. They're just a super scrappy, hustling team. Their guards like to shoot the 3 or drive aimlessly to the goal. You won't see a lot of post entries or inside out type of play.

Kevin Punter is their main threat, he drops 22ppg. Armani Moore is their best 'big man' and just has a knack to find the ball for rebounds and put backs. This is the one game that Bridgewater can contribute very well in.

Overall, game makes me very nervous because it's @UT which is a difficult place to play. But we do well in bounce back games and this is a must win.

LSU - 78
Tenn- 74

Personally I didn't think LSU had much of a chance before the Bama game, but I'm feeling the Tigers have something to prove in this one. Since having our full team available, LSU has played particularly well following a loss and I think LSU does it again. I'm gonna go LSU 83, Tennessee 78 in this one.

This is a big game for the tigers and if we fail to show up and win, we'll pretty much be out of it barring a miracle finish and help. Hopefully cry baby tim isn't playing today

I have been a big opposition of people throwing around the term 'must win game' all season, but I honestly think LSU can only afford 1 more regular season loss if they want an at large (barring a huge SECT run and giving UK a scare in the championship). Having UK on the road on the schedule basically makes this one a must win game.

We recruited kasongo pretty hard

Someone better guard punter and keep him on the perimeter or else it will be obosohan 2.0

Thanks again Butt and SOS, it is appreciated.

Tennessee has been Jeckyl and Hyde home and away this year, and Punter is capable of going off at any time and carrying the Vols.

For me it comes down to want to, effort and focus. If LSU chooses to come out with their hair on fire and play with all those qualities, they are the better team and will win.

That seems to be a big challenge for this team. They will do it in spurts but seem too often to do it for a bit and then coast as if to show yes, we can do it but we don't really want to expend that energy all the time.

Got to find a way past that, and hopefully the urgency of our situation, which IMHO is about as urgent as it can get at this point, will spell the difference.

Geaux Tigers!!

Just saw LSU is the favorite with a -2 spread. Shocked to be honest. If I was setting a line I'd probably go Tennessee -4. Still think LSU can win it, but really surprised by that line.

Hate to use the "must win" cliche, especially as early as Feb 20, but yeah today really is a must win.

Just saw on twitter that Blakeney is sick... IDK if that means he isn't playing or just a little under the weather, but not good for depth.

LSU should take care of business today. Tennessee is a tough place to play but the matchup really favors LSU. Arkansas is a more worrisome road game.

Tough one. Guards kill LSU because they get beat on the dribble and their help defense is not good. Their team perimeter defense is not very well thougt out. Hope we win.

Thank you SOS!

I think Tenn is a good matchup in that we won't have to play a slow halfcourt game like bama. They don't have the size or depth to slow down Simmons or Victor down low. The key is stopping their guard penetration and avoiding foul trouble.

This one's got me nervous. Would have really liked to have a win in the bag this week, but Wednesday did not go according to plan.

Must win. Backs against the wall. Let's fricking ride, brothers.
