It's hard to imagine that LSU's defense won't take a bit of a step back this season. They lost some really big contributors - Adams, White, Beckwith, Riley, Godchaux. However, LSU can survive a bit of a drop-off on Defense if the offense can consistently put up 20+ ppg in SEC play, most importantly, against the top teams. LSU averaged 28 ppg in SEC play last season. But against the better SEC teams that number was significantly less: Auburn - 13, Florida - 10, Bama - 0 (if you want to step out of the SEC) Wisc - 14

Even with the expected drop on Defense, if you give LSU at least 24 points I think they will have a shot to win just about every conf. game.

the argument is are they a better duo that Fournette/Guice LAST YEAR. I would say that is definitely a possibility seeing as how Fournette played hurt all year.

Yeah, but he didn't say that. He said because of their contrast in running style.

Agreed, his reasoning is flawed. The overall point, to me, could be correct though.

I would say Thompson's job is less on Divinity's athleticism/play making ability and more on Thompson's inability to stay healthy.

The defense will get stronger as the season goes. We have quality depth everywhere and early season snaps for the youngsters will pay dividends later. It will be fun to watch them grow in year two of the Aranda scheme.

I really think Kristian Fulton will step up and be a big contributor this year.

WR Stephen Sullivan

DUde has potential to be the one of the greats at LSU. Watched some of his HS tapes. He looked to have very good hand and seemed like he has at least decent speed though he may be faster than I'm thinking, guys with his long stride tend to be moving faster than they appear, what is often refereed to as deceptive speed. Has anyone seen him play in person?

No way we are better in the backfield after losing Leonard. Ridiculous. Are we very good? Yes. Better? No way

He said it was "conceivable" that we could have a better backfield this year. What if Guice improves, his overall game, which he should and DWill plays himself into a 3rd round NFL pick? If that happens, along with Fournette not being 100% the entire year, and what most think is a major upgrade at OC and play calling...It is at least conceivable to some, depending on just how big a believer they are in Dwill, Guice and Canada.

I was more surprised that he feels Caleb Roddy will emerge as a major contributor this year.

Everybody expects the Tiger defense to suffer due to those losses. The cool thing is that they very well could end up being a top ten cal defense when it is all said and done. The potential is certainly there in every position. I am most interested in how the DL will look and will there be enough quality depth to truly last 4 qtrs. against those tough offenses.

It's definitely going to be a year of youngsters stepping up to be the next LSU greats!

He may be improved, but I don't see that happening.

I agree because Guice was # 2 last year & he's arguably as good as LF.

Williams is a step down from Guice

I like the write up, but come the frick on.

Unless he's just counting games in which Fournette couldn't participate due to injury.

He said this:
quote:

Mixed with Canada’s potential to diversify, that makes the backfield more challenging for defenses.

He is counting on the new OC to add wrinkles which will open up running lanes for the LSU backs. Among 1 or 2 other variables. He is Not comparing RB vs RB.

That wasn't his justification for his point, though.

I also think Ray Thornton is a talented athlete who could contribute quite a bit.

I am also hoping Sci Martin will have recovered from his injury well enough to make his presence felt. He could be yet another really good pass rusher for the Tigers.

It's surprising Eric Monroe doesn't get mentioned more. He redshirted last year. He was the #3 Safety in the country (Delpit was #9).

I don't have any insight into practice so if he's just not doing well then so be it, but I would think he'd be pretty good when it comes down to it.
