I was at the game, sitting in the NE corner of the field 8 rows up and it was hard to see what was going on when Bama drove to tie the game.
I have not been able to catch a replay, nor had time to research what happened. What few posts I read today showed some disagreement as to what defense was deployed to allow the drive. During the second half up to that point, it seemed like the D was pretty good, only giving up relatively short passes that were quickly shut down inbounds. Was some sort of prevent used?
Can someone enlighten me or will I get an arguement started? Thanks.

We blitzed a few times. Sims made the throws, the receivers caught difficult balls. We couldn't tackle in bounds. Clutch drive by Bama. Drive was More about what they did well than what we did poorly.

They were clutch. That's all there is to it. We held them to 10 points for 3 quarters and they drove 55 yards in 50 seconds with no timeouts to tie the game.

Defenders were back at least 10 yards off the receivers....very different from how we defended the last drive against Ole Miss where we played tight against the receivers. Of course the results were different as well.

Thanks for the replies. I was not sure, but the above response was what I suspected, although from my vantage point I could not see what they were doing. I always ask this: why do we change what works. It happened in several games we lost over the last few years, one other Bama game in particular i remember.

Sure, it loses us the game EVERY time we try it....but we keep on trying it expecting different results each time! Sounds like the definition of insanity.

Good grief... no they weren't.

You guys play SO MUCH man coverage. No one else in the league can defense Bama the way you did. The game will be up on YouTube soon since it was a classic, you can watch the TV feed.

Defenders off the receivers and Jalen Mills blitzing from 5-8 yds off the line every down. Only on 1/7 plays did it almost work (Sims) run.

Same D as two years ago. Same result.

The results against OM and Bama were almost identical. The defenses by LSU were very similar. Sims tried to tie the game and was successful on the last two plays.

Wallace tried to win the game on the last two plays and was not successful.

If most of you will be less emotional and more analytic, anybody with any sense can see that both those games were similar.Try to observe what actually happened, and not in an emotional retrospect come up with something different.

LSU lost in OT on one and barely won on the other.

The last one sucked and the previous one was great because of the eventual outcome. I agree.

Last bump I will make....
So there is some disagreement over what the Defense was. Some say the defenders backed off for that drive, others disagree. i hope I can catch a replay!
I do know the D was exceptional in the second half up to that point, then the wheels fell off and Sims looked like Drew Brees moving down the field. I thought we did something different.

On the first play, Adams has a chance to tackle Howard after just a six yard gain. The fact he let him get out of bounds was killer. Tackle him there, and Bama loses at least 15-20 seconds in running the next play. Further in the drive, Jalen Mills has a chance to sack Simms on a blitz where he is not picked up but doesnt breakdown and whiffs on the tackle allowing Simms to break containment and get out of bounds. On the same play, Jefferson also has a chance to force Simms back to the inside where the pursuit in coming from but takes a poor angle and allows Simms to get out of bounds. Tackle him there and the game is over. On the 4th and four play, Kwon blitzes and once again loses containment and allows Simms to escape the pocket and extends the play. Mills cant keep the coverage and we have the sixteen yard completion. We didnt play prevent at all. We dialed up pressure but our guys just didnt make one single play to stop the drive. We make one of those plays and the game is over. Simms made about 4 good plays in that drive, and we didnt. That was the game right there. Once that game went into overtime, they had all the confindence and momentum to pull it out.

Thanks for that. I couldn't understand how they kept getting out of bounds; wasn't sure if it was a coverage change or what.
I want to see the replay really bad. Forgot to record!

The results weren't really different Ole Miss drove on us then, too. They just had a bone-headed delay of game and an unexplainable interception while still in field goal range.

Great post SWcTiger.

It was not a prevent. We just didn't make the plays.

Prevent D with a couple of corner blitzes thrown in.
