Record last week: (1-1)
Kentucky 71, LSU 69
LSU 73, Tennessee 55

Week Summary: LSU had the nation on the edge of their seats as they were taking the undefeated Kentucky Wildcats to the wire. The Tigers held a late 6 point lead before allowing the Wildcats to win by two. Still, LSU played a very good game against a team that may be the best team we've seen in college basketball in a while. They followed up their emotional loss with the best half of basketball they've played all season. On the road at Tennessee, the Tigers took a 47-20 lead into halftime. The Tigers couldn't hold up the same pace in the second half, but still pulled out an 18 point win 73-55.

Streak: Win 1

Top performer: Jordan Mickey scored 36 points and hauled down 18 rebounds in the two games this week. He also swatted 11 shots, including 7 against Tennessee. Mickey has been dominant both on offense and defense and threw down an impressive, cradle rocking windmill dunk against Tennessee after he stole the ball on defense.

Cause for Concern: The Tigers are in 5th place with 6 SEC games remaining. The top 4 teams get a two round bye in the SEC Tournament, so LSU is outside the threshold of where they want to finish the season. However, they play at Texas A&M on Tuesday night who is just 1 game above LSU and still play Ole Miss at home who is also just a game above LSU. A strong finish is absolutely paramount for LSU to accomplish their goals for this season.

Top Team Stat of Week: The 47 points in the first half against Tennessee was the most by an LSU team in an SEC game in Coach Jones' tenure. It was a nearly flawless first half.

Rankings and Standings:
CBS RPI 53 (LW:50)
ESPN RPI 50 (LW:51)
BPI 38 (LW:42)
KenPom 31 (LW:43)

Breaking the trend: After making less than 70% of their free throws in 4 straight games, LSU knocked down 78% (14/18) of their free throws against Tennessee.

Best game by a non Big5 player: Against Tennessee, Brian Bridgewater was able to play 8 good minutes. He scored 4 points on an ally-oop dunk (first dunk of career) and 2/2 free throws.

LSU Opponent who made noise: Sam Houston St won both of their games last week and have moved into first place into the Southland Conference at 11-1 in league play. They are 20-5 on the season and will be heavy favorites in the remainder of their games until a huge season finale against 10-1 Stephen F Austin (SHSU's only loss).

Interesting Stat of the Week: Jordan Mickey's 7 blocks against Tennessee tied his career high. He has blocked 7 shots on 4 occasions (3 this year). Jordan Mickey leads the NCAA in blocks and blocks per game with 85 blocks and 3.7 per game. (Note: Robert Upshaw averaged 4.47 blocks/gm before being removed from team with Washington)

LSU Scorers this week:
Jordan Mickey 36
Keith Hornsby 33
Jarell Martin 30
Tim Quarterman 15
Jalyn Patterson 14
Josh Gray 10
Brian Bridgewater 4

LSU Rebounders this week:
Jordan Mickey 18
Jarell Martin 16
Jalyn Patterson 8
Tim Quarterman 8
Keith Hornsby 7
Josh Gray 5
Darcy Malone 5

LSU Assists/TO this week:
Tim Quarterman 13:5
Keith Hornsby 7:3
Jalyn Patterson 5:2
Josh Gray 3:1
Jarell Martin 2:5
Jordan Mickey 1:5

SEC Standings:

Most Dominant SEC Win of the Week: Kentucky 77, South Carolina 43 - While LSU had the most dominant half against Tennessee, Kentucky had the most complete game against a struggling South Carolina team. UK led 43 to 18 at half and outscored South Carolina 34 to 25 in the second half to win by 34 in Rupp.

Biggest SEC Upset of the Week: Georgia fell victim to another bottom tier SEC team knocking off a team looking to make the NCAA Tournament. Auburn wasn't given much of a shot against Georgia before pulling out the 69-68 victory, but Auburn was able to score 4 big points in the last minute to pull off the huge upset.

Bracketology:

Recruiting News: An LSU coach went to go see 5 star combo guard, Kobi Simmons, last week. It was the second time this month that LSU has sent a coach to see him. He plays for the same AAU team (Atlanta Celtics) that Tim Quarterman played for in Georgia.

This week in LSU Basketball:
LSU at Texas A&M - Tuesday 8:00pm SECN
Florida @ LSU - Saturday Noon CBS

The aTm game is very, very important. I think the biggest game of the year could be the season finale against Arkansas on the road, but this aTm game is right next to it. I was really thinking about trying to get to College Station for the game, but I just couldn't pull the time off needed.

Huge game. In addition to the RPI boost, LSU and A&M could be the final two teams out of the SEC fighting for a NCAAT birth. It certainly won't help LSU's chances if A&M has a two-game sweep head-to-head. Also, a win tomorrow clinches a winning SEC road record for LSU (with 2 more road games still to play). The fact that LSU can win "anywhere" could help them out come selection Sunday.

While the UK game was a great opportunity for LSU, it can be argued that the game tomorrow is the biggest one of the year thus far.

It's too soon to say something like this, but has this team turned the corner since making their very impromptu, unexpected second half comeback v/s UK?

The moxy that the entire team has showed since that point has been impressive. The high-flying action and 3-point shooting has been exciting, but the execution has been even more impressive.

I think LSU played very well against Alabama, Kentucky, and Tennessee. I will say I think the team grew together in the Kentucky loss. I saw a lot of social media posts from players in the days following the game that were saying win or loss it was all about the team and that they believe in themselves.

While I take no moral victory in almost beating UK, it could certainly have given them confidence.

Glad to see our kenpom get a big boost unlike our RPI. We go and destroy a top 100 team @ their place and we barely move. I just don't get it.

I thought with the UK game and the road win we could get a boost in RPI, but oh well. I like the road record a lot.

We are 4-2 against teams currently in top 50 RPI which is good. 8-4 over top 100. We get some good chances to end out the season with some quality wins.

Yea our record against top 100 RPI is pretty impressive. But the 3 120+ losses are killer. We have the good of a Top 5 NCAA seed and the bad of a top 5 NIT seed.

Certainly those losses aren't great. However, I think the committee would be willing to look at those as anomalies if LSU can keep winning the rest of the way. 2 of the 3 losses were on the road, and none were by double-digits. Glass half full translation: Even at their worst LSU is still a tough team to beat.

The real killer for LSU is not the three "bad" SEC losses, but the bad SOS. LSU has the second worst SOS in the SEC and the 3rd worst non-conf SOS (192 overall). We knew that would be a problem from the beginning of the season, and shame on Jones and Co. for not scheduling better. The committee has been pretty clear that they don't look favorably upon teams that "hide" in the OOC part of the schedule. LSU did compared to the rest of the SEC. That's why the margin of error in conference play is so slim. There's nothing LSU can do about that now though. Just have to start stacking up "good" wins. A&M, Ole Miss and Ark. are the last opportunities to do so.

Nice write up! What do you think about our current projected seeding compared to Georgia? I have no argument with our current projected seed in bracketology but I'm confused how Georgia would be an 8 seed. They have some ugly losses as well and there's no impressive quality win. We also beat them in the head to head matchup.

LSU's recent history on Mardi Gras night:

2009: beat Florida
2007: lost to Kentucky
2006: beat South Carolina

I expect LSU to finish either 3rd or 4th in the SEC, most likely 4th. My biggest worry about the team is that they shot so well in the first half from 3 against Tennessee, I worry that they will fall in love with their 3 point shooting again instead of getting the ball inside.

Hornsby has been by far the biggest difference this year outside of M&M. I keep hearing about his "inconsistencies" of late, but I think he has been fairly consistent outside of the first month of the year. Overall his defense and ability to push the ball and finish on the break has been great.

The obvious reason to say why UGA is getting a better look is their 32 RPI. LSU has a better KenPom and better quality wins. But they have 1 WTF loss really, while LSU has 3. The fact that Missouri is 1-11 and we are the 1 win is embarrassing.

if they can get through A&M and Florida unscathed they'll put themselves in a great spot. You can be at 9 wins going to Auburn. should win that one to get to 10 and then you have three chances for win 11 against ark, tenn, ole miss with 2 of them at home.

UGA -

Strength of Sched. (SOS): 24
Non Conf. SOS: 61

LSU -

SOS: 102
Non Conf SOS: 192

LSU has some good wins, but they did not play a tough schedule. UGA did.

Now, keep in mind that LSU still has some good RPI games left to play (A&M, OM, Ark, even UF) so the overall SOS ranking should go up. But still, at the end of the season UGA will have played a much tougher schedule. Thus, the reason for them being a higher seed than LSU at the moment. Who you play is very important
