So is there a rule that prevents what happened to LSU in 2010? I don't see anyone getting sent across country any more like that. Obviously no one ever projects that, so is there a rule about it?

I don't think there are specific rules. Just that the committee tries to keep the term "regional" relevant. Sometimes schools do end up traveling far due to balancing the competition or to avoid pairing conference teams.

There's no rule about it. I know a couple of years ago Georgia got sent to Oregon State

Well to be fair, that was the year after it happened to LSU, but UGA was a three seed, LSU was a two.
