Realistically, I didn't think we would host a regional this year when the season started and was generally OK with that, considering the talent we lost on offense.

We didn't have the pitching depth to finish the job last year, and I didn't see how our pitching would pick up the lineup's slack well enough to keep our head above water in the stacked SEC West.

But we persevered through our early struggles, and the players and coaches each deserve a great deal of credit for - amazingly IMO - staying competitive for the SEC regular season title until the final game of the regular season.

The lineup has performed much better than expected, and after a rough start the pitching has come together to complement them and close out close games. If yall are being honest with yourselves, there was no reason to think we would be a national seed in January, but here we are.

So can we make some noise? Obviously we have to win this regional first. I personally still think that making a super regional would qualify this as a successful season, but I know for some of you its CWS or bust every year.

However, I've come around to thinking we have more pitching depth than in any of the previous 5 seasons. We have two very good college starters - one of them being elite - and our bullpen can put 9 solid innings together with different combinations of 5 or 6 guys.

With the prioritization of pitching and the way our lineup can work the count, I think this team can sneak in to the CWS and, once there, who knows what could happen? Regardless, I'm pretty impressed with this team and will continue to enjoy them for as long as this season lasts. Rally Possum 4 Lyfe.

What do yall think?

tl;dr: We're better than I thought, and maybe we can win this whole damn thing. But even if we don't, we've probably exceeded expectations.

There was no reason to think we were heading in the direction of being a regional host, much less a national seed

Not sure how we would be considered a dark horse since we took 3/5 from the #1 overall and we are a national seed.

I'll say this.

We definitely don't have quite as much starpower as last year, however the cohesion of this group is higher than last years.

I think that is a very large part, whether people admit it or not.

I'm not saying we'll win it all, but I think if we make it to Omaha, this team will have a much better showing than the last 2 teams.

A dark horse would be like Coastal Carolina, DBU, or maybe an Oklahoma State, not a national seed.

agreed, there's something about this team

they have so far exceeded expectations with a national seed

if they make omaha after losing 8 starters, that's phenomenal

This. I don't think there is a team in the country other than TAMU who wouldn't be nervous about having to play us. LSU is going to be a tough out in a double elimination tournament.

I agree, but also feel that if we get to Omaha and win a few games, CPM would have my vote as Coach of the Year. Because I honestly never thought we had a chance.

When we were losing to Arkansas 9-1 I thought we were just too young and inexperienced to have a successful season. Then rally possum happened!

Sweet....Nice to know we have a Super Regional locked up if CC gets passed NC State. You can make Omaha reservations safely now.

This team does not really match up well talent-wise with Florida/Louisville/Texas A&M this year.

But you're right in that we can hang with those teams. However, we're the No. 8 seed and that itself was a close call. I feel comfortable saying that we're not expected to do much in Omaha by those who cover/follow college baseball closely.
