BATON ROUGE, La. -- LSU and the University of Louisiana-Lafayette will not play against each other in baseball or softball next season because of a near brawl between the teams during NCAA regionals last season, officials said.

LSU baseball coach Smoke Laval and softball coach Yvette Girouard said this week that games between the schools would be dropped until tensions calmed down. The LSU and ULL baseball teams nearly brawled during the NCAA regional finals at Alex Box Stadium in Baton Rouge, which LSU won. The incident led to the ejections of a ULL pitcher, ULL coach Tony Robichaux and LSU shortstop Aaron Hill.

"It's better off for the two institutions to take a break,'' Laval said. "Somebody might get hurt here. So, let's cool it.'' LSU athletic director Skip Bertman, former longtime coach of the Tigers baseball team, supported his coaches' decisions. LSU made the decision to stop the games, taking Robichaux and softball coach Stefni Whitten-Lotief by surprise, said Robert Broussard, ULL's sports spokesman. Broussard said ULL was told about LSU's decision about three weeks ago.

"It's tough, it's frustrating when you have two of the better programs in the state not being able to play,'' Broussard said. "It's sad for the fans because it really is a good rivalry, especially in softball because head coach Girouard was the head coach here -- she built the program from scratch.'' When LSU played ULL in a softball regional at Lafayette, a plaque in honor of Girouard's time at ULL was removed from the school's Wall of Honor. School officials are uncertain who removed the plaque. ULL officials are planning to put a new plaque up if the original one is not found, Broussard said.

LSU's baseball team was tentatively scheduled to play ULL once next season, and the softball team was set for a doubleheader at Lafayette. Laval said he might try to replace the ULL game with a third game against Tulane. Broussard said ULL's baseball team rescheduled an additional game against Nebraska on May 4 to make up for the lost game. Broussard said losing the game with LSU would not affect the two teams' efforts to qualify for the NCAA championships. "The game with LSU is more about bragging rights and talking about at the office the next day,'' Broussard said.

That was in 2002. I think it's a safe bet, that after tonight, it will be years from now when we play again. The butthurt hatred of USL fans.

it just seemed odd that he assured cajun fans that despite losing the series with lsu they still planned on trying to be good.

Yes, it was awesome. One of the hottest days I've ever seen; think it was something like 102 that day. I was soaking wet with sweat.

Ignorant. You people do realize they have been playing every year since 2009, right? Obviously from these comments y'all didn't know this. And hit the first UL batter? So what? Laast time LSU went to Lafayette they got stomped 7-0. And LSU's first game in the new ALex Box UL won 11-9 or 10-9. It was a very exciting game. LSU won 4-3 in 2010, and UL won 11- in 2011.

And for softball. If LSU and UL played 10 times UL would win 8 of them. Best softball program in the State

Cliff notes for Shoot em...

ULL beat LSU in the Regional. LSU comes out of the loser's bracket, had to beat them twice.

LSU drums ULL in Game 1.

In Game 2, Matt Heath hits a home run adding to another big LSU lead. As Heath rounded third base, he stared into the ULL dugout, in his words, "to let them know we were for real". All the ULL crybabies in the dugout, led by their coaching staff, come out past the top step of the dugout ready to fight. On Heath's next at bat he gets drilled in the back with the first pitch of his at bat. The ULL pitcher and Tony Robichaux gets tossed.

A few batters later, Aaron Hill was batting and the bat slips out of his hands on a swing at a pitch. The bat flies into the Cajun dugout where acting head coach Wade Simoneux cries and claims it was on purpose. The umpires, not wanting to seem impartial, ejected Hill.

After the 2 game drumming LSU gave ULL, Wally Pontiff famously explained why the Tigers won the Regional. "We were playing to make it to Omaha, and they were playing to beat LSU."
