I remember reading in some college football book several years ago about the origin of the term "Lights Out Defense". It came from a game in Death Valley against A&M (I believe in the 80's). Late in the 4th quarter, LSU was winning by less than a touchdown. A&M drove the ball inside the 10, and the Tigers made a goalline stand. During the final set of downs, the lights behind the endzone at that end of the stadium went out, thus the term "Lights Out Defense" was born. Can anyone remember what year that was?

Yeah, read it in some book about college football stadiums. I haven't seen it mentioned on the LSU Sports website or anything like that. I figure as much emphasis we've put on defense the past few years, they would want to capitalize on that tradition.

I feel like I've heard the term "lights-out" for a lot of other stuff, though. Not only defenses.

Interesting, never heard of that before, but the Internet confirms:

quote:

In 1988, the Tigers stymied the Texas A&M Aggies at the LSU two-yard line despite the distraction of a bank of lights going dark midway through A&M's series of plays. For that series, LSU's defense was nicknamed the "Lights Out Defense."

On page 3 of the pdf (numbered page 60).

Lights out originally came from no boxing. When's knocked out a person sees nothing but darkness; i. e. as of the lights have gone out, but I do love the LSU reference, of which I was not aware

I was at that game and I'm sure it was 1988. But have to confess that I don't recall the defense ever becoming nicknamed "Lights Out" or anything else because of it - maybe that was a headline in the next morning's Sunday Advocate because the LSU D played very well and some of the lights did go out near the end of the game. But only a bank or two of lights went out. And I don't recall the game being very close either - I think LSU won by 3 or 4 TDs in a shut-out win over yet another over-rated Aggie team from the 80's. I think that was Jackie Sherrill's last year at A&M (leaving having never beaten LSU) to be replaced by Slocum. That was also the last year before the longest, darkest decade in LSU Football history started in 1989.

28-0; 1988 opener I believe waxing of the Aggies and yes some of the west light banks went dark for a bit. Might have been precursor to Entergy who knows

I am pretty sure I remember this. Back in the 80s they used to bring in temporary lights for tv games to help brighten the field. If I am not mistaken, these were the lights that went out briefly.

I was there in 88. I remember the lights in the upper deck went out. It was not a total blackout though.
