The Advocate

quote:

Latz, LSU’s injury plagued redshirt freshman left-handed pitcher, threw from an elevated surface on Tuesday for the first time since his latest setback, coach Paul Mainieri said Tuesday.

“He wasn’t 60 feet, 6 inches away,” Mainieri said, “but he was on the slope of the mound, which is a little bit different than throwing on the flat ground.”

Mainieri is “cautiously optimistic” about Latz and said he’ll throw from an elevated surface again soon as he recuperates from a stress fracture that flared up during fall practice. The Illinois native remains on track to return in mid-April, Mainieri said.

I'll believe it when I see it.

Even then I may doubt what I'm seeing.

I certainly don't want to over react. Especially with latz, I'd like to remain in a believe it when I see it state of mind. But dam it's hard not to be excited about the potential of these guys. Like really, for once we might not be the cream of the crop, we might continue to struggle early. But frick, I almost like the way this could set up for us. We might actually hit a stride late in the season and be the "it" team or "hot at the right time." Last year was amazing and I really think it was a much better team overall. But this squad has a much different feel than any mainieri has had before. Sure, we could end up middle of the pack, lose in an away regional. But even in the early season I feel like this could be one of those 8 seed SEC tourney teams that just wins the bitch and rides momentum as far it can take us in the field of 64.

We won't know the feel of this team for a while. He's had young ones before, it's just been a while.

Jake Latz, like Travonte Valentine, does not exist.

Tiger pitchers struck out 12 and walked only 1. Impressive night.

McKay, Cartwright, and Newman were all solid.

If Romero knew how to catch a baseball in the 1st McKay wouldn't have given up that run

As far as if Latz returns what is his role out of the pen? Setup?

Think Chad Jones, except that Latz is white, and minus the dreadlocks of doom.

Edit cuz I'm a dumbass and called Latz a righty to begin with.

But I could see him being a dude who just comes in for an inning or 2 at a time toward the end of the year...like Chad Jones

Ease him in at first. He won't have the stamina to go too long and he's going to need to throw off rust for possibly a month. No reason to over work or stretch him too long, IMO. Make him a stopper vs Lefties. Devall is our only other one out of the pen.
