This is the first I've heard this. The criticism against Steele lies in the X's and O's.

Kevin Steele is a good recruiter and was fired by Clemson because of his defense. He was only a LBer coach at Alabama but the DC at USCe. He only lasted 2 years or so. Brent Venables former DC for Oklahoma has got that team playing great defense something Steele could not. I like Steele as a person but as a DC not so much. He was just a quick fix replacement for John Chavis. Who ever endorsed Kevin is getting the last laugh. LSU can do much better.

I am tired of listening to the bs about Steele and Clemson in the Orange Bowl. Let's tell the truth about that game shall we? There were 4 turnovers by the Clemson OFFENSE which contributed greatly to the 70 point score by West Virginia. One was a fumble at the 1 yard line as Clemson was attempting to score and Clemson fumbled and the ball was picked up bya WVU player and returned for 99 yards for a TD. There were 3 other turnovers which led to scores by WVU. No one ever mentions the horrendous play of the offense in that game and I guess I am the only guy actually watched it because I definitely recall that the Clemson offense didnt have good either. Sure Steele was fired but do you e pect

And what you'll find is that Clemson turned the ball over 4 times and did not possess the ball. We managed to force 4 turnovers, which might be attributable to coaching, but maybe not. LSU was very good winning time of possession which helped the defense. Clemson's offense did not win ththe time of possession battle which hurt their defense.

Was Clemson's defense as talented as the 2011 LSU defense, especially in the secondary? If not, then perhaps his coaching wasn't nearly as bad as these critics would like you to believe.

That said, it could be argued Clemson's defense contributed to their offensive malaise (if you can call 33 points a malaise) but it isn't clear if that was the case.

Sure Steele was fired but do you expect Dabo Sweeney to fire himself? Clemson did get to the Orange Bowl that year and had a decent record. Steele may turn out to be good or bad at LSU but in all fairness there was much more wrong in that Clemson loss to WVU than just Kevin Steele.

WVU threw for 463 against chavis, much more than they did against steele's defense

the difference in the game was turnovers and field position. LSU forced 4 T/O's against WVU and the clemson offense turned it over 4 times.

WVU ran for 70 and threw for 463 in '11, and their passing yards were only after we had a commanding lead and Chavis decided to trade passing yards for clock and get LSU a win against a good team. Can't really say that WVU's domination of Steele's Clemson defense is similar to what WVU did against Chavis' D, because they are totally different situations.
