His remarks in the Times_Picayune on Miles' raise. Why, exactly, are they interviewing this guy?!

NOLA Article

quote:

Now Cope's a smart guy, and I don't mean to make fun of him. While he counts himself as something of a fan and attends "a few games" each season, he is unconvinced LSU should have football as such a priority. Indeed, he sees the state's obsession with the game in general, and the Tigers in particular, as something like "an index of poverty," in that it points to a dearth of entertainment options he finds more intellectually stimulating.

And this
quote:

"You might say the obsession with football is indicative of the inadequacies of education in Louisiana," he argued, noting the hordes of people who descend on campus on autumn Saturdays largely comprise a "weekend culture with no interaction with the university" beyond the game.

Hard to disagree with what he says. It is a sad state of affairs when your athletic department has to bail out the academic institution that it stands for.

There is a strange correlation of shitty public education systems and the popularity of college football. I love college football myself and am in SC. Our public school system blows...bama? Mississippi? Georgia?

There are other correlations as well, as in, quality of the football played, demographics, etc.

lol, well as has been said many times on this board.."consider the source" just go to this guys pupil ratings (he is a terrible prof in the eyes of most students), or his picture (worth 1,000 words), or his stance on teacher's pay, or his personal life issues(well known) or even listen to (or try to) one of his classes on youtube, the guy is a poorly spoken, pompous, overpaid, union lackey who is the rep for lsu faculty- feel bad for most of them, because is an empty suit and many of them are hard working people who teach well...

While I love Tiger football, he hits the nail on the head when he talks about football demographics. Football is more popular among lesser-educated, blue collar people?
In other news, water is wet.

I'm not saying its an absolute, but lets not kill the messenger for speaking the truth... Even if he did come off as a pretentious arse.

wow, and basketball is popular at places like UConn (richest $ state in US), syracuse (top 20 academic schools), St Johns (10th winningest program, in manhattan) etc, etc. and it brings up just as much fanatic and slimey behavoir as football...so are you saying that the "smarer people" like cleaner sports and pay less (what is Jim Calhoun making as his program sits out of NCAA's for academics???), come on! there are points to be made on both sides, but education and sports fanatics cuts across all sports and all areas

I actually don't think this is true, especially when it comes to major college football. Precisely because of its connection with the university, college football tends to attract a higher-class following than the NFL does. Just compare a Saints crowd to an LSU crowd and you'll see what I mean. I think the same is true for UGA fans versus Falcons fans, Texas fans versus Cowboys fans, etc.

More to the point, Cope is an absolute tool. He is a self-parody that embodies everyone's worst stereotypes about academia. Does he really believe that Louisiana's interest in football stems from a lack of "more edifying" entertainment options? Sure, Kevin, nobody shows up for Rutgers games because everyone in New Jersey is at the symphony . What a moron...

And how much $$$$$ does LSU football contribute to the university so that all the tenured professors can keep their jobs????

Cope needs to accept reality and deal with it. No football = less school, less education, fewer professors, etc.

Embrace the Hat!

What an arrogant arse. You might say that the obsession with football by faculty members is indicative of the overestimation of their own self worth. If he doesn't like the culture or entertainment options in Louisiana he should go to someplace that fills his needs. He should not bitch about the guy that brings in the money that pays his salary. But then, he could always refuse any money that comes from the football program.

The relationships, and the reactions, remind one of arguments about red-state anti intellectualism.

That is extremely rare in college football...and admirable in my opinion. I dont think there are more than a handful of teams in america that make a profit in sports and then give part of that profit to academia.

Michigan, Notre Dame, USC, Stanford? I think this would be news to the fans of these institutions. Blue collar? I would bet there are more white collar fans than you would ever know. Think about the price of season tickets. More white collar fans than blue would be my guess.

Michigan, Notre Dame, USC and Texas are all in the Top 10 in all time wins with massive followings.

All four are outstanding universities.
