There is a great Bert Jones story from his day...Jones bet Rusty Jackson, the punter, that he could throw the ball further up the TS bleachers than Jackson could kick it. Legend holds that on the pressbox side that Jackson got it to the 10th row from the top while Jones got it to the 3rd row from the top. Bill Belichick called Bert Jones the greatest pure passer he's seen.

Used to work at a business that Bert frequented. The guy was cool as hell and was always making wise cracks. Has this "good ole boy" kind of personality, nice guy.

I grew up with his kids, graduated HS with one of them. I've actually been to a few parties at his house. Pretty cool guy.

I had an English class with Bert and Collis Temple. For the final Bert was on my left and Collis on my right. Before class they stopped me outside and made sure I didn't plan on covering my paper.
Bert later sent me tickets to a Colts game.
I know CSB

BTW, Evidently we all passed.

Yeah, he came into our office today and I didn't really want to bother him, but I just had to get his autograph on my helmet. He was very nice about. He seemed shocked that I would know who he was. I'm 30.

Bert's lack of playing time helped a lot of people figure out that Cholly Mac needed to go.
Also, I would like to come to Josh Booty's defense: He was alot better than Hatch, too.

I met Ken Mendenhall, the Colts center in the 1970s, and he worshiped Bert Jones. He told me a story that near the end of his career, the Colts used a high draft pick on a center, obviously to replace him. He could see the writing on the wall in training camp. But Bert Jones went to the coaches and complained that the rookie didn't make the center/QB exchange properly, saying it was injuring his hands. He needed time to build chemistry. By doing that, he bought Mendenhall one more year on the roster as a starter.

Years later, he never forgot that act of kindness to an old player nearing the end of his career.
