Houston usually is a pretty damn good basketball program every year and if they're not in the tournament every year, they are definitely close to it every year. I have no clue if they are good or not this year, but it's still very nice to beat a decent program by about 20 points.

I went tonight and was really impressed by our effort. This year's team seems to just care more than last year's. That may not be fair, but it's what I gathered. It was evident to me early on that we almost had to win this game. Our strength of schedule is destined to be shite, and for us to be in the game--at home--I felt like this was one we had to finish. And we did. Very convincingly. That impressed me. No thanks to the crowd, though, who was extremely weak. Football season is over, no excuse for that showing. All said, though, a nice evening of LSU basketball.

They have the talent to be good, but the HC is fricking garbage, and I've seen middle school girl's teams run more plays on offense than JJ does.

This team is impossible to get a read on. One day they're blowing out decent teams, the next they're losing by 40+ points to teams that shouldn't beat us by 40 points.

Houston is not terrible , but not a Tournament team.
LSU has more chemistry this year, but they were at home as well.
Johnny Jones will be gone next year and I'll buy my season tickets again.

They are also a veteran team that crushed LSU last season.
Didn't that game last year go to overtime?

Not a big JJ fan and I don't see all this "talent" on the Tigers roster. However,I'll give them props tonight, as they looked like they knew what they were doing for a change.

But he forgot to tell the team that the shot clock was about to run out.
This is hysterical. I sit court side and some of this is really hard to miss, but it's crazy how it appears he's absolutely clueless what's happening on the court. Early in the second half, Houston's bench was going insane informing their players we were in bounding the ball with only 6 seconds left. CJJ finally hears their bench(almost at half court) and frantically signals to our players we only have 6 seconds on the shot clock. It's almost comical. One of many laughable moments, but regardless the team played well tonight. Very impressive.

We don't play for another 2 weeks so we'll have time to rest on our laurels.

Johnny Jones actually smiled last night. Doesn't happen often.

I will say this, it's the first time since the middle of the season last year I've seen an LSU hoops team look like they were coached in the least.
And defense in the second half, I've seen that maybe 3-4 times a year out of a CJJ coached team, but it never seems to stick.
Here's to hoping it does cause that was a treat to see us play defense and give effort and energy. Hasn't happened often enough the past few years.

Houston isn't good
Before last nights game I would have said Houston is a good bit better than LSU, based off of what I saw in the Atlantis Tournament.
To be clear I didnt watch Houston play at all before last night. Just based on the two terrible performances from us.
However, we did look like a focused basketball team and we actually MOVED THE BALL AROUND. People were setting screens, they were moving without the ball.
Having a TRUE point guard in Skylar Mays is going to be very helpful for LSU going forward. I dont think we have had a true point guard in a decade.

Helps that Reath was on the floor.

seriously...disciplined is the last adjective to describe our offense. It's ball screen, stand around and jack it up.
Look we looked good tonight because we shot over 50%,
but we have nothing to turn to when the shots aren't falling

Maybe last night. Did you happen to watch the "Battle 4 Atlantis" games? They have a long way to go.

If we are comparing those 2 teams between this year and last.....this LSU team plays much better. I watched the Houston game last year and was WTF the whole time.....this year our D set the tone in the second half.
I admit this is the first time I've watched these tigers this year, but they looked good in this game!

I was on a flight back from Houston Monday afternoon and the Houston basketball team was on it. I was sitting in the row next to the head coach and his son. The head coaches phone goes off to none other than "Party in the USA"...At that moment I knew we would win...

I'll give you this, that defensive performance against Houston last year was among the worst in my 40+ years of watching LSU hoops. No hustle, no awareness, no indication of a team concept at all. It was embarrassing.
Compared to that this was lights out defense.
My issue has always been it's not that CJJ doesn't know anything about basketball he just can't get his kids to translate it from practice floor to court nearly consistently enough, in fact it translates far less than not. Accountability.
It translated last night. There have been glimpses of this under Jones but it seldom continues more than 1 or 2 games. Let's see what happens here.
