Does anyone know what happened to John Peterson this year.He was golfing real good and all of a sudden I haven't heard his name.Is he hurt?

He sat out the year after hand surgery.

Anyone know the PGA Tour status rules regarding injuries? I would assume there are special exceptions with losing/retaining your card while not playing due to injury..

There are, but they aren't that simple.

Believe you have to petition the tour and they treat it on a case-by-case basis.

Knew a guy on the web.com tour who took a one-year injury sabbatical. His status remained frozen for one year, and upon returning he had to make a certain amount of money in a specified time period to keep his card. If they caught him practicing at all during that year, it was null and void.
