Older Tiger fans will remember John Ferguson as the play-by-play radio voice before Jim Hawthorne. This World War II history blog has a story about what he did during the war.

Great read. Pretty incredible stuff about flying at nearly 30,000 ft in a non pressurized cabin. Those men were as tough as nails.

I met with Mr Ferguson on several occasions on matters of the TAF. He possessed a sort of regal bearing yet was very humble in a way that you'd expect that he'd accomplished such feats.

I grew up listening to him on the radio as a child in the 60's, I think it was WWL 870am,New Orleans. We had very few games on TV, all on the radio. Ch. 8 in Monroe would carry about 2 a year and Ch. 10 would always carry LSU/Arkansas. Otherwise it was Ferguson on the radio. The whole family would sit around and listen to the games. Fun.

My grandfather was an LSU alum who also flew the Hump.

quote:

They called it flying “The Hump,” that being the understated description of the Himalayas. They ran cargo missions from India to China, helping keep the beleaguered Chinese in the war against Japan. It sounded simple enough. It was anything but.

From Jan. 4 to Jan. 8, 1945, a large storm settled between Allied air bases in northeast India’s Assam Valley and Chinese air strips at Kunming and Chengtu, causing aircraft instrument needles to spin in circles. Ferguson heard lost pilots on the radio begging for directions. In two days, 24 airplanes from Ferguson’s base, Jorhat, crashed.

“The whole sky looked like it was on fire from one end of the horizon to the other, and we couldn’t get over the stuff,” Ferguson said.

Ferguson might have been the 25th crash, but his co-pilot spotted Jorhat through a hole in the clouds. Ferguson cork-screwed the C-87 through that break. A thunderstorm socked in the airfield as soon as his wheels hit the runway.

Many good memories from the 60's sitting next to our Zenith tube radio listening to him along with Walter Hill and the ballgame. He was good enough that you could actually close your eyes and visualize the game as it happened.

Hawthorn wasn't bad, but he was no Ferguson.

Oddly, I still have that radio and it still works like a horny tomcat. Sound is a good as it was 48 years ago. That was when Zenith was a top of the line and made in the USA.
