Trenton >> Hours after Jared Mitchell belted a walk-off home run in the 11th inning on Tuesday night, Thunder manager Bobby Mitchell had to deliver the bad news.

Mitchell had been released by the Yankees.

Calling it the hardest thing he's ever had to do, the first-year skipper informed the outfielder on Wednesday morning after he got permission from the organization to do it then rather than after Tuesday night's game.

"It just gives me goosebumps thinking about it because it was like the worst," Bobby Mitchell said after the Thunder's 2-0 win over Richmond on Wednesday morning. "It's just part of baseball. I always hate having to do it, but it's part of my job. It was supposed to be done (Tuesday) night after the game and there was no way I could do it after the game. I was not going to ruin his celebration."

I was really hoping he could stick somewhere and get a shot in the league. Tried to create a link but, can't for some reason

Can they not make use of his speed and perfect V shaped upper body?

Did you know that Jared Mitchell also plays wide receiver for the football team?

Chad Jones was also a safety on the football team.

Camera pans to show Les Miles in audience.

Sucks. But strangely awesome that he hit a walkoff homer on his last at bat.

Didn't he catch the long ball from Jarrett Lee to help beat AU on the road in 2008 also?

That was Chris Mitchell. I don't think Jared ever had a football play of significance.

^This. Not the worst way to go out. It's gotta end sometime for everybody. Doubt too many end their career with a walk off.

I knew a guy who got released right after throwing a complete game shutout. That was a bad day.
