Normally every year we have played multiple games against similar opponents. This year our only common opponent has been Ole Miss and we all know how that crapfest went. Lets take a look at that match up though.

Alabama 25-0 Ole Miss +1 Turnover Ratio
LSU 24-27 Ole Miss +1 Turnover Ratio

We all know Ole Miss could have scored at least 9 or so points against Bama if Hugh Freeze would have went for the field goals. We also know that our offense could not keep the ball and handed Ole Miss the ball 3 times in scoring position. With all this I would say that Alabama's defense is about 14 points better than ours. I would also say that our offense is about 10 points better than theirs.

Some interesting things to look at also.
Alabama 35-10 VT
Duke 17-10 VT

Alabama 49-42 A&M
Auburn 45-41 A&M

Alabama 45-3 Georgia State
West Virginia 41-7 Georgia State

Alabama 48-7 Kentucky
Miami(OH) 41-7 Kentucky

Alabama 52-0 Arkansas
South Carolina 52-7 Arkansas

Alabama 45-10 Tennessee
Mizzou 31-3 Tennessee

Just trying to show a little perspective. After seeing these types of things we can understand that Alabama is not that much different than most teams in the country.

After doing a little schedule researching and comparison, I do think Alabama's defense is 14 or so points better than ours. I also think that our offense is 10 or more points better than theirs. This will be a closer game than I first imagined.

But they have Saban, of course they're going to blow us out!

Your key assumption is that there exist a transitive property in college football. It doesn't exist. If it does at times appear that it exits, it's only due to coincidence.

There is some value in comparing common opponents. I would agree that people take it wayyyyy too far and put entirely too much stock in it, though.

I understand that my post does not explain everything when it comes to Alabama or this matchup. I was just posting the only things we have to compare by at this point. In 2011 we both played many common opponents and beat them all almost the same. We all knew it would be close and it was. What I provided is the only thing we can go by.

One correlation that has been fantasticly accurate in college football has been college football recruiting. Win that year over year and your chances of winning national championship increase significantly. Bama has won the last four in the row. LSU is fifth in the SEC over the past 3 years. Compared to bama we just don't have quality depth especially on defense. We can go toe to toe with bama when comparing offenses however defense is whee we really fall short.

In order for us to win this game three things need to occur to overcome bama's talent advantage, bama turnovers, bama mistakes (penalties) and Saban coaching errors (he does make them).
