oh my...

Look, I understand that in the 80s basketball was, by default, #2. That's fine and great. There are other ways to express excitement that aren't so childish. And wtf is this "rightful" bullshite?

Apparently not...

I definitely recall a time when no one knew LSU had a baseball team while the Basketball team was drawing huge crowds. Students spent the night outside PMac to get into a game etc.

This shouldn't be an arguement. It is not a zero sum case. LSU should be able to field powerful teams in all major sports. To think less is to be Les.

I agree. And no one denies that basketball was once the big sport. But at LSU for many years, baseball has been "bigger" simply meaning more successful and more popular. That's not "wrong".

It would be great for the brand if hoops could do well enough to accomplish that as baseball is strictly a regional sport and garners very little interest or attention nationally.

But that's a tough ask, there are other factors, cultural and otherwise that at this point have baseball at a point of popularity here that is fairly unique in college sports today.

Plus it's much more conducive to tailgating than hoops which for many LSU fans has really become more important than the games themselves.

The year John Brady went to the Final 4 there was 1 soldout basketball game....let me repeat, 1.....game.... in a year where we had an incredible team with mega local talent......

Now do I even need to talk about LSU baseball attendance stats????
Anyone saying LSU basketball takes precedence over LSU baseball needs their head examined.... as whole throughout the country, yes.......but clearly not at LSU.

That was the point.

I've apparently triggered quite a few people, though.

I havent read this whole thread, but I get the jist of it from this last page....

Being triggered and correcting you arent the same thing...
When National talking heads talk football is LSU mentioned? Yes. When they talk baseball is LSU mentioned? Yes. How about basketball? Ha.
LSU is a major brand in football and baseball. Its just not so in basketball. Yes we've had Maravich, and Shaq, and a Final 4 appearance or two, but there is NO WAY someone can seriously believe basketball is a more popular sport than baseball at LSU. I dont care how many fans the building can hold compared to the Box.
In fact, a reason basketball slumps so bad is because LSU fans are already gearing up for baseball season.... I know nationally its the opposite and LSU is capable of having and should have a top tier basketball team, but still....baseball is winning the popularity contest BIGLY right now

Either you're an idiot or you knew exactly how some people would respond to the OP because you think some hierarchy exists outside of football. And I get it... it must really suck for you the last decade. Basketball has the capability to outperform and outdraw baseball on a regular basis again. That's always there because LSU baseball could always fall off at the same time basketball gets some success/excitement. Not sure one being "bigger" than the other is "rightful" though.

He's much more than a baseball player. He's a legend. He just happens to play baseball.

Basketball and baseball barely play their seasons during the same time. I don't care which one is the 2nd biggest sport. I enjoy both.

We all love LSU baseball but this country revolves around football and basketball. Baseball will never be on the same level as them. If LSU basketball can get back to respectability it will pass baseball

Basketball will always play 3rd fiddle to football and baseball.

We have championships in those in the recent past.

Finally someone who knows history besides just reading a wiki page.

If you guys had any sense of history you wouldn't be making this asinine argument.

For those of us older than our current players (and our current coach for that matter) there was a fairly long time frame where basketball was gigantic at LSU. While there were no national titles, the sense that the program was important and supported was never in question. From Pistol through Shaq LSU put some of the greatest college players ever on the court.

None of that takes anything away from baseball, and regardless of what anyone thinks this is not some zero sum game where fans can only be fans of two sports. Point is, it's a GOOD THING that LSU's baseball program is a monster, and that LSU Football always has been. When and if LSU's basketball program returns to being one, it ought not take away from the others...it'll be folded into what makes being a fan here great.

To deny what LSU basketball was is silly, and to pretend that it's impossible to regain that with the support structure available to the program should it start to pick up and fans flood back into the PMAC makes no sense.

LSU baseball can still be the best baseball program in the country while being the 3rd sport at LSU.

No doubt...but I think you're incorrect if the reason you think that happened was because no one here enjoys basketball. We know that isn't the case, and we have the video to prove otherwise from not THAT long ago.

For my money, the reason that happened was because the basketball program had been down for a quite a while by that time, and on top of that Brady was never well liked. Had the team built on that success, and the teams following it had produced similar type runs, then there is no doubt in my mind the fans would have returned to the PMAC in greater numbers.

In the end, it takes winning to put asses in the seats. Isn't that what ultimately put them in The Box? Isn't that what's putting them in the seats for freakin' gymnastics? The basketball program needs to win, or if not it needs a charismatic coach like Brown back in the 70's ginning up excitement in the program until the wins come.

re: It is time for men's basketball to reclaim its rightful place as 2nd biggest sport at LSU
I guess somebody needs to decide if we're talking about the hierarchy of sports now, or 30 freaking years ago.....

Can the status of basketball change at LSU, certainly..... but as it stands now its a long way off from overtaking the other two.... and theres a reason for that. I wish Will Wade nothing but success but he has his work cut out for him. The reason theres such apathy for the basketball program is bc football and baseball take and keep alot of the fans attention.....
