Apparently no one wanted the job.

So LSU hired Steele.

It's the truth. People keep spreading false info. He was never fired or demoted at Bama.

This is not difficult to search yet the same people who bash others over the TD search function fail to do their own research.

Where is Dooley now? Cowboys? Their receivers played pretty well.
Dooley also did a good job at LSU with special teams.

He hired him the same way you hire a recruiter, give him a job title and a coaching position he never coached before

So less responsibility for 1 mil

Don't let these guys fool you, Steele went from DC in 2007 to co-DC in 2008 with added titles in 2008 at Bama. That's a demotion with benefits.

He took the DC job at Clemson the next year and was fired 3 years later.

He went back to Bama after being fired at Clemson, not to be DC, or co-DC again, but recruiter. He got to coach LBs last year as well.

Not only did he get rid of an overpaid assistant, he managed to get a division rival to pick him up and pay him more money to take a crucial position that he'll likely fail at.

Why the frick would saban need help getting rid of someone and why the frick would saban have someone in that position that was likely to fail?

Saban, the guy most of you people bow down to on a daily basis - now can't manage his own coaching staff.

You people are fricking retarded.

Why are you people so dense? HE WAS A POSITION COACH AT BAMA

He has been a DC, associate HC, and LB coach for Saban, clown. Saban would not have rehired Steele if he was a poor coach or recruiter.

You and the other clowns crapping on this hire don't have a fricking clue as to whether Steele will work out or not. Acting like you know he will suck only shows how much of an emotional idiot you are and what a poor excuse for a fan.

You name me one, ONE time this guy excelled at anything other than being a good recruiter and a position coach. Why should we expect a guy who gave up 29 points a game as a DC for Clemson his last year there and won 1 Big 12 game in 3 years at Baylor as a HC to all of a sudden be a f*cking defensive guru? Because he held Sabans clipboard for a few years? Give me a break........

What's funny Is that people were hating the possibility of Haley being hired as DC, but are trying to fight everyone who sees that Steele is an average at best DC.

Good position coach, great recruiter, meh at best DC.

Just like some awful had coaches are great coordinators, some coordinators are perfectly good position coaches.

That we couldn't grab an actual DC is VERY telling. And before you say it. If we could have grabbed an actual DC but went with Steele, that's just plain stupid.

He hired him before he fired him.

Short answer, Yes.

I was told by an inside source last week and heard the same name from another inside source that Kirby Smart was the guy. I believe Hannigriff heard the same name which is why he did a 180 and was excited about the hire when things were looking down last week.

I have no idea what happened with Smart. My guess is he was interested but Nick talked him out of it and we offered Steele the job because the dead period is ending this week. If that's the case then that's just dumb. Again I'm only speculating as what transpired may have been completely different.

Unfortunately he's the DC now and we just have to hope he proves many of us wrong.

Steele was also fired from Clemson and had 70 hung his defense with his players by WVU.

How would this board feel if another SEC team hired Bradley Dale Peveto as their DC. You would laugh and he is on our staff right now. Or if we hired Shoop and Penn State hired Manny Diaz you would laugh. This is a bad hire from a PR standpoint. The guy has had a gig and he sucked at it. That's the resume we are hiring off of.

Saban ultimately is Bamas DC so it really doesn't matter who they hire. They just need to be able to recruit and do what they are told.

ETA: And can we desist with questioning people's loyalty to LSU If they don't support the hire. We support LSU football and it will outlive any one personality, and if true fans detect that the program is going in the wrong direction then sometimes coaches, ADs, players need to get out of the way and move on. It's the reason the most devoted NFL fans show up at the draft and the same reason they boo if they don't like the pick.
